Kyrie Irving shocked the NBA world on Friday after he surprisingly requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. The talented point guard appeared to be good with the Brooklynites after a tumultuous start to the season, but things changed really fast for Irving, and the Nets once again learned that.
This situation sparked a lot of reactions from fans and even Kyrie’s former teammates like Tristan Thompson and LeBron James. He was even told about the possibility of reuniting with the King, but so far, nothing is certain for the 2016 NBA champion.
Meanwhile, everybody around the NBA is trying to find an answer to this situation, and reports of potential new teams for Kyrie are coming nonstop. The Dallas Mavericks have been mentioned among the potential suitors, as well as the Los Angeles Lakers, a team linked with Kyrie since last season.
Los Angeles Could Create A Superteam With Kyrie Irving And Ben Simmons
That said, many have tried to find a good trade package for Irving, and recently, ESPN’s Tim Bontemps proposed a very good trade involving Irving and Ben Simmons going to the Los Angeles Lakers.
During a recent edition of the Hoop Collective, Bontemps proposed a trade that would send Russell Westbrook, Patrick Beverley and the Lakers’ 2027 first-rounder and 2029 first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets (6:36 mark):
“You have the Lakers in a position where the only chance the Lakers have to even have a chance to be a high-level competitive team, and not just one that maybe makes the playoffs is if they walk into getting a guy like Kyrie Irving on their team. So the Lakers can sit there and say, ‘well, we don’t need to do this trade. We’re not gonna take on Ben Simmons, we’re only going to give up a heavily protected pick, we’re gonna do this, we’re gonna do that.’ But you’re presenting the Lakers with a get-out-of-jail free card and the one chance they have to be a really good team. If I’m the Nets, I’m milking that for all that’s worth if I decide to do something with Kyrie. If they just say right now, ‘hey, we’re trying to trade Ben Simmons, what’s the cost?’ I think it’s, at minimum, two first-round picks. You’re talking to me about $90 million in debt salary, so if you get rid of that, that’s a heck of a lot of value to your team to get off of that money and move forward without it,” the insider explained.
The Los Angeles Lakers have a good chance to land Kyrie, but they need to offer a compelling package to the Nets. Irving has a big market that includes the Mavericks and Phoenix Suns, but we’ll see in the next few days where he’ll go next and what package this unknown team decides to send to Brooklyn.
