It was a historic moment in the NBA during the second quarter of the Lakers preseason game against the Phoenix Suns, as Bronny James entered the game to share the court with his father LeBron James. It is the first time ever that the father-son duo ever shared the court with each other in a professional setting.

While the moment surely meant the world to both Bronny and LeBron, the two made sure to keep their composure and focus on the game, as the Lakers entered the second quarter with a 34-25 lead over the Suns. As professional basketball players, the two couldn’t stray away or lose focus from the mission at hand, which was to try and win the game.

Unfortunately for Bronny James, his performance in the few minutes he was on the court was really poor. In just 4 minutes, Bronny grabbed 1 rebound, turned the ball over 3 times, and picked up a personal foul.

On top of that, the Lakers had their lead cut down greatly with him on the court. Head coach JJ Redick took him off the court fairly quickly. Bronny James will get at least one more opportunity in the game. But in the first few minutes, he didn’t do much to impress fans or give them any highlights.

These kinds of mistakes are to be expected from Bronny James. He is far from a finished product and hasn’t played regular, consistent basketball in more than a year, as his stint with USC was affected greatly by his cardiac arrest last year. On top of that, he is still developing and is more of a G-League prospect for the Lakers.

Redick wants to give Bronny James minutes in the preseason because that will allow him to experience playing against professionals before the NBA season begins, and help him understand what level he needs to be at if he wants regular minutes in the NBA.

Bronny James Showed Small Signs Of Skill

In his first preseason game for the Lakers, Bronny James didn’t have the best outing, as he put up just 2 points, going just 1-6 from the field, along with grabbing 1 rebound and providing 1 assist. But where James shined was the defensive end, as he secured three blocks against the Timberwolves.

This is where Bronny can continue to shine if he locks in and plays primarily as a defender. As an offensive player, he still has a long way to go and needs to develop his game and rhythm to adapt to the pros.

But as a defender, he can be a difficult player to play against, as he has quick hands, and a great vertical, allowing him to pick up both steals and blocks with relative ease.

Perhaps using him as a defensive option is part of head coach JJ Redick’s strict development plan for Bronny James. We will see how well Bronny develops as the season tips off and plays out.
