LeBron James wants fans to pump the brakes on retirement speculation. On a recent appearance on ‘360 with Speedy,’ the Lakers star addressed the rumors and explained why his latest off-court ventures don’t mean he’s ready to walk away.
“I’m not hinting at anything,” said James. “I know I’m on the other side of the hump and I’m not gonna play another 23 years, that’s for sure, and I’m not gonna play another 10. I’m definitely gearing up to where the end is, but I’m not there yet, and I’m super blessed to sit here in year 23 with another signature shoe. Listen, guys, every time I pick up something new, it does not mean retirement… Retirement is coming, but it’s just not here just yet.”
LeBron has already set the standard for NBA longevity. Heading into his 23rd season, James remains one of the best players in the game and a leader for the Lakers. Last season, at 40 years old, James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game on 51.3% shooting.
As a four-time champion, four-time MVP, Hall of Famer, and the league’s all-time leading scorer, James has nothing left to prove, and his legacy is set as one of the greatest ever to play. With his contract set to expire next summer, James has the perfect opportunity to go out on his terms, but his journey is not yet over.
On the court, LeBron’s dominance has barely waned, and he’s expected to play a major role on the Lakers alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. If they’re able to win a championship together, it’ll be yet another thing that the King can add to his resume.
At the very least, James has reason to stick around for Bryce. With Bronny already in a Lakers jersey, LeBron has already made history as the first father-son duo in the NBA, but it may just be the start of an epic family reunion. Bryce will be eligible in the summer of 2026, meaning James has to play just two more seasons (minimum) to realize the dream of playing with both of his sons.
In his current situation, it wouldn’t make sense for LeBron to leave now. There’s still more he can add to his legacy. Most importantly, he still enjoys the grind of keeping his mind and body in peak competitive condition.
As for his new “hobbies,” James isn’t about to let them get in the way of his game. As he takes up things like golf, yoga, and philanthropy, LeBron is expanding his repertoire while maintaining his focus and commitment to the Lakers. It’s a delicate balance that only someone like the King can achieve. How long it lasts, however, is anyone’s guess.
LeBron knows the end is coming, but he’s making it clear it won’t be rushed. As long as his body holds up and his passion for the game remains, he’ll keep suiting up for the Lakers with his eyes on more history, more wins, and possibly the chance to share the floor with both of his sons before he finally calls it a career.
