Portland Trail Blazers (formerly Memphis Grizzlies) superstar Ja Morant is one of the most electrifying in-game dunkers in the NBA today. Although physically diminutive in comparison to others, as an immensely athletic guard, Morant is known for ruthlessly attacking the rim to posterize opponents.

As one of the premier professional leagues in the sporting world, the NBA is home to some of the most gifted athletes. While dunks are viewed as one of the most electrifying moments in basketball, there is a clear distinction between athletes who can dunk and those who can pull off jaw-dropping feats of athletic prowess during a game.

On that note, during a recent interview with Overtime, Ja Morant was asked to rank some of the best in-game dunkers in NBA history. In typical fashion, however, Morant boldly picked himself ahead of some notable personalities.

Interviewer: “Vince Carter or Zion Williamson?”

Morant: “I’m an SC [South Carolina] baby, man. I’m going with Zion.”

Interviewer: “Zion Williamson or LeBron James?”

Morant: “Alright, bro… Zion.”

Interviewer: “Zion Williamson or Anthony Edwards?”

Morant: “Zion.”

Interviewer: “Zion Williamson or Ja Morant?”

Morant: “Me.”

Interviewer: “Ja Morant or Dominique Wilkins?”

Morant: “Me. From any name you say after this one, it’s going to be me. You name it!”

As a South Carolina native, selecting Zion Williamson may seem biased. But when looking at Williamson’s dunk catalog, especially from his high school and college days, the pick seems completely justified.

Although Ja Morant’s body of work pales in comparison to players like Vince Carter, LeBron James, and Dominique Wilkins in terms of quantity, there is no denying how spectacular his collection is. Having dunked on some of the best defensive players in the league, Morant makes a solid claim for being one of the best in-game dunkers in NBA history, though this would certainly be a debate.

Ja Morant Gears Up For A New Chapter

After several trade rumors hinted at an exit from the Memphis Grizzlies over the course of the 2025-26 season, Ja Morant finally found himself on the way out this summer. In a shocking move, the Portland Trail Blazers acquired Morant, pairing him with Damian Lillard to form a new star-studded backcourt.

People viewed this trade with skepticism, primarily because of Morant’s reputation. However, there may be some evidence to suggest that this could be a welcome shift for the two-time All-Star.

Over the course of the last year, Morant has been forced to face the facts. Given the distinct lack of trade interest in the market, the 26-year-old must make adjustments if he is to return to his place as one of the league’s premier point guards.

For the most part, Morant has responded to the trade positively, displaying excitement with the notion of playing in Portland. On paper, this could also be a solid move for the Blazers.

When healthy, Morant remains one of the most explosive athletes in the NBA. Last season, the 26-year-old averaged 19.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 8.1 assists per game. Although his defensive involvement is questionable, there is no doubt about his impact on offense.

Although he isn’t physically imposing, the two-time All-Star is incredibly efficient when attacking downhill. When pairing this with his playmaking ability in drive-and-kick sets, a perimeter threat like Damian Lillard is bound to thrive.

Overall, being moved to a team like Portland is a fresh start for Ja Morant. If the guard can remain healthy and keep his antics in check, there is no telling what he and the Blazers could achieve next season.
