Russell Westbrook is officially headed to free agency, and the Miami Heat have emerged as the betting favorites to land the former MVP, according to Sportsbook Bovada

1. Miami Heat +260

2. Dallas Mavericks +325

3. Sacramento Kings +500

4. Golden State Warriors +750

5. Orlando Magic +750

6. Oklahoma City Thunder +900

7. Hapoel Tel Aviv +900

8. Toronto Raptors +1000

With odds set at +260, Miami leads a crowded field of potential suitors that includes the Dallas Mavericks (+325), Sacramento Kings (+500), and Golden State Warriors (+750), among others.

Westbrook, who just completed his 17th NBA season, declined his $3.5 million player option with the Denver Nuggets for the 2025–26 season.

While Denver remains a possibility, reports suggest Westbrook is also interested in joining the Phoenix Suns. This reunion could benefit both veteran guards and give Phoenix a veteran boost alongside their core.

The fit makes sense for both sides. The Heat are coming off a disappointing season after trading Jimmy Butler midyear, and they’re in need of a veteran presence with championship experience and edge.

Westbrook, though no longer the athletic force he was at his peak, remains one of the most competitive and energetic players in the league.

He averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists last season with the Nuggets, helping them reach the Western Conference Semifinals before falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a grueling seven-game series.

Despite playing through multiple ligament tears in his right hand, Westbrook was still effective off the bench and in spot starts. He underwent surgery following the season but has already made it clear he’s preparing for a full return.

The Heat could be the perfect stage for that comeback. With their culture of toughness, discipline, and work ethic, often referred to as “Heat Culture,”—Westbrook’s relentless motor and emotional intensity could thrive.

He’d also have the opportunity to play alongside Bam Adebayo and a core of young shooters, providing leadership and playmaking in the backcourt.

Miami’s current roster lacks a true floor general following the departure of Kyle Lowry and Butler, and Westbrook’s ability to push the pace and create for others could fill that void. Even at 36, he’s still capable of swinging playoff games and providing energy in ways that go beyond the stat sheet.

Other teams in the mix include the Dallas Mavericks and the Sacramento Kings.

The Golden State Warriors and Orlando Magic also reportedly have interest, while long-shot bets include a return to the Oklahoma City Thunder or an overseas move to Hapoel Tel Aviv, though the latter appears highly unlikely given Westbrook’s stated intention to play in the NBA next season.

Westbrook is a nine-time All-Star, nine-time All-NBA selection, and was the league MVP in 2017. He’s also part of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team and ranks among the league’s all-time leaders in triple-doubles and assists.

Wherever he goes, the fire still burns. And right now, it looks like South Beach may be the next stop on his legendary journey.
