In a recent episode of NBA Today, former NBA big man Kendrick Perkins revealed his early pick for the NBA’s next MVP. Out of a field of potential candidates, Perkins named young star Anthony Edwards as his MVP pick for the 2024-25 season.

“Anthony Edwards, the young man we’ve been comparing to Michael Jordan,” said Perkins on who will win MVP season season. “I think right now, from watching what I saw last year, especially in the Olympics, Anthony Edwards is out to go and get his. He wants to win and this year I wouldn’t be surprised if he led the league in scoring, to be honest. He is not waiting on anyone and I know he wants to win the championship.”

Nikola Jokic won the MVP last year with averages of 26.4 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 9.0 assists per game for the Nuggets and he’s probably the favorite to win the award next year. He and Joel Embiid have been going back and forth with the award for the past three years now.

But if there’s anyone with a chance to steal the MVP from those two, it’s Edwards. The 23-year-old guard averaged 25.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game on 46.1% shooting last year. With unmatched athleticism, a wide range of skills, and a relentless competitive motor, Edwards is quickly rising the ranks as one of the best players in the world.

Last season, he led the Wolves to the third-best record in the West at 56-26. He powered his team through two rounds of the playoffs before losing in the West Finals to the Dallas Mavericks.

He followed it up with a superb showing at the Olympic games. In 16.3 minutes, Edwards averaged 12.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game. It was an impressive run for his first Olympic stint and he’ll be among the early invites for the Los Angeles games in 2028.

While Edwards has said some controversial things recently, especially about the talent level of former players, his game speaks for itself. At just 23 years old, Edwards is already one of the young faces of the league and he controls the fate of the Timberwolves future.

If he can carry his team to the top of the standings while averaging at least 20 points or more, it may be enough for Edwards to not only win the MVP, but solidify his status as one of the NBA’s premier athletes. Just like Jayson Tatm did this summer, Edwards will have the chance to solidify his place and history and cement his status as a generational superstar.

With the bar set so high already, it’s anyone’s guess how soon Edwards can reach his maximum potential but if it’s anything like last season, then success is sure to follow for the young star and his Timberwolves.

Clearly, Edwards has shown enough of his game to earn the benefit of the doubt but now is the time to back up his words if he wants to stay in the good graces of the fans. If he can answer the call and rise to the occasion, it could be the start of a superstar run for Edwards that marks his place in the history books forever.
