The NBA All-Star Game was inaugurated in the league in 1951. The 2023 event, which will be held in Utah, owns a long history. All-Star Game Weekend is one of the most fun times with the skills competition, Three-Point Contest, and Slam Dunk Contest. With that said, the exhibition game between the league’s star players is always a fun treat. Since the league adopted new rules changing the format, the All-Star Game may be an exhibition, but it has rewards delegated to charities that make it more competitive.

Making an All-Star Game is also a decorated award for players that are playing well midway through the season. The All-Star Game starters have been named, and now we await to see the rest of the roster. The reserves feature an additional seven players from each conference bringing the total number of players to 24. Out of the hundreds of players, 24 players will represent the league by being named “the best.”

According to the NBA, Head Coaches will select the reserves. These picks will include two guards, three frontcourt players, and two additional players at any position.

The NBA players that should make the All-Star reserves roster will feature heavy debate, but these are the players from each conference that should be selected.

2023 NBA All-Star Starters

Eastern Conference All-Star Starters: Giannis Antetokounmpo (captain), Jayson Tatum, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Donovan Mitchell

Back in December, many of these players were playing at a high level, so getting most of these predictions right about the All-Star starting lineup was not a completely hard test. Starting with the Eastern Conference, Giannis Antetokounmpo is playing some of his best basketball right now. He is currently third in the scoring race with 31.7 points per game and is averaging 12.0 rebounds to go with that. The Bucks are right in the mix for the top of the Eastern Conference, trailing the Celtics by just 2.5 games.

Speaking of the Celtics, Jayson Tatum is playing like an MVP candidate. Tatum is one of seven players averaging over 30.0 points per game this season. Tatum’s line is 31.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.1 steals. Tatum is currently holding off the Bucks but also the Nets as well. The Nets are currently 5.0 games out of first place and have two spectacular players leading the team toward a top seed. Durant has been hurt as of late, but he played enough to show he deserves to be an All-Star. In 39 games, Durant has averaged 29.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game.

With Durant out, Irving has helped pick up the slack. He is averaging 27.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.3 assists and is shooting 37.7% from three-point range. Since January 8th, Irving has scored 40 points twice and has flirted with 50 points when he scored 48 points on January 20th. Rounding out the East is Donovan Mithcell, who should be a dark horse in the MVP conversation. The Cavaliers are 31-21 and could insert themselves into the top 3 spots in the East anytime. Mitchell is averaging a career-high 27.9 points, shooting a career-best 39.6% from three-point range, and has scored 70 points this season.

Western Conference All-Star Starters: LeBron James (captain), Stephen Curry, Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, Zion Williamson

LeBron James is doing everything in his power to lead the Lakers. This 38-year-old magician is averaging 30.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game. He is shooting 50.7% from the field. With Anthony Davis limited to 27 games this season, James has been the person trying to put this team on his back. Stephen Curry is in a similar position. The Warriors have been an average team this season but not due to Curry’s incompetence. Curry is averaging 29.5 points, a career-high 6.2 points, and 6.4 assists, and is once again shooting over 40% from three-point range.

Luka Doncic is currently pacing himself to win the scoring title. Doncic’s 33.0 points per game are second in the league. Doncic could flirt with a triple-double this season as well, averaging 8.9 rebounds and 8.4 assists per game. His 11.1 field goals made per game are right up there for leading the league as well. Nikola Jokic is pacing the Nuggets to the second-most wins in the league and the No. 1 seed in the West. Jokic is shooting over 60% from the field for the first time in his career. Along with that, the center is 0.1 assists away from averaging a triple-double. Think about how Oscar Robertson and Russell Westbrook are the only players to ever do that. Jokic is averaging 25.1 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 9.9 assists and could join that list by the end of the year.

In 29 games, Zion Williamson has shown enough. The demise of the Pelicans in his absence is also a validation of his belonging. When Williamson was healthy, the Pelicans owned the top seed in the conference. Now, the team is trying to find themselves amid an eight-game losing streak and a 1-9 mark in their last 10 games. When healthy, Williamson was averaging 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.1 steals, and shooting 60.8% from the field.

Eastern Conference All-Stars Reserves

Guards: Tyrese Haliburton, James Harden

Frontcourts: Jaylen Brown, Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Joel Embiid

Let’s take a moment and look at the top of the standings and the players that have helped those players get there. For starters, Joel Embiid probably should be a starter for the All-Star Game but fell victim to the vote. Embiid currently leads the league in scoring at 33.8 points per game. Embidi is also leading the league in made free throws per game (10.0), rebounding 10.0 boards per game with 4.2 assists, 1.1 steals, and shooting an impressive 35.8% from three-point range. If the 76ers continue to keep pace with the Celtics, Embiid could be a top-3 vvote-getterin the MVP race again.

The NBA world believes that Embiid is one of two 76ers players that should get a nod at the All-Star Game. Harden has been part of the team’s success as well. Harden has not qualified for the number of games played, but when he does, he will be leading the league in assists at 11.1 per game. Harden has reduced his points (21.4 PPG) but is averaging a double-double, making it two 76ers averaging double-doubles on the team.

We can’t forget about Jaylen Brown, who is the second piece of the puzzle for Boston leading the league. It seems like we say this every season, but Brown is having a career season once again. Brown is averaging a career-high 27.0 points and 7.2 rebounds and is shooting his best-ever 49.1% from the field. With Brown and Tatum leading the way, the Celtics have a real shot at making it back to the NBA Finals.

Here is where it gets interesting. Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler would beg a pair of teammates to make it for the Miami Heat, who are the sixth seed right now. Some could say that Trae Young, DeMar DeRozan, or another Cavaliers player is deserving. However, both players are having successful seasons. Butler is shooting over 50% from the field and is leading the league in steals, just barely over OG Anunoby. Meanwhile, Bam Adebayo is having a 20/10 season with 21.4 points and 10.0 rebounds. That includes playing hustle defense. While the Heat is not overwhelming anyone right now, these two players would be All-Stars with their line on any other team.

The only exception to a “bad team” having an All-Star in the Eastern Conference is the Pacers. At one point, the Pacers were in playoff contention but are currently in a 1-9 slide in their last 10 games. That has put them out of the play-in tournament for now. At one point, though, Haliburton was leading these Pacers to the upper tier of the standings, which prompted some analysts, such as ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins, to say that he was an MVP candidate. Haliburton has missed time recently but is averaging a double-double of 20.2 points and 10.2 assists. Bad team or not, there is no way a guard averaging a 20/10 points-assists double-double should be snubbed.

That leaves us with the last member of the All-Star Team. Julius Randle is playing similar basketball to when he was an All-Star in 2021. The Knicks are in the thicket of the middle tier of the Eastern Conference. Without Randle, the team would be lost. Randle is averaging 24.7 points and 10.8 rebounds. His assists are down compared to the last two years, but he is shooting the ball much better than last year. With Jalen Brunson taking some of the load off, Randle can play naturally, and that type of play is All-Star-worthy.

Western Conference All-Stars Reserves

Guards: Ja Morant, Damian Lillard, De’Aaron Fox, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander,

Frontcourts: Lauri Markkanen, Jaren Jackson Jr., Domantas Sabonis

We are one year away from Ja Morant being an All-Star starter, plain and simple. That’s a bold prediction, given that he has to pass by Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic to get to that status. If he keeps this electric play up, it will happen. Morant is showing that in his fourth year in the league by averaging 27.3 points and a career-high 8.2 assists per game. The Grizzlies are in contention for the No. 1 seed, which is why his teammate Jaren Jackson Jr. will be considered the second Grizzlies player to make the All-Star Game.

With a 32-18 record, just two games out of first in the West, it would be shocking to see Jackson not picked. Right now, Jackson has played in 34 games due to missing some time. If he plays the majority of the season and qualifies for blocks per game, he will be in contention to lead the league. Right now, Nic Claxton’s 2.7 blocks lead the NBA, but Jackson is averaging a career-high 3.2 blocks per game with his 16.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, with an impressive 37.1% shooting from three-point range. This tandem, when healthy, is All-Star worthy.

That notion would contradict the effort of the Nuggets, who would have just one player on the ASG roster despite leading the conference in wins. If anyone, Aaron Gordon would be worthy of making it with 16.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, and an impressive 38.9% shooting from three-point range. Jamal Murray could be in the mix, too, as he is hovering around 20 points per game. However, a pair of Kings players are going to overtake that spot. Domantas Sabonis is averaging 18.5 points, 12.3 rebounds, 7.3 assists and is shooting 60.8% from the field. De’Aaron Fox is averaging 23.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and shooting 50.5% from the field. In addition, the Kings are in playoff contention for the first time since 2006. All of those variables led to the Kings getting two All-Star nods and their first selection since DeMarcus Cousins.

Why does Shai Gilgeous-Alexander get to make it, then? Have you seen this kid play this season? First of all, the Thunder are just 1.5 games out of being a playoff team. With this roster, take SGA out of it, and this team is looking at the No. 1 pick sweepstakes. SGA is averaging a career-high 30.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.1 blocks. Those are some pretty impressive stats, regardless of the team not being in the playoff bracket right at this exact moment. If he turns it on just a few percentage points, this Thunder team could be in the play-in tournament as an eighth seed.

Damian Lillard is in a similar situation. The Trail Blazers are right around the Lakers in the standings. Like LeBron is to the Lakers, Lillard is to the Trail Blazers. With a line of 30.1 points, 7.3 assists, and a three-point percentage of 37.0%, he will likely get consideration. If he remains over the 30-point-per-game threshold, Lillard will likely get in. As for the final wild card pick, Lauri Markkanen is flirting with joining the 50-40-90 club this season. Markkanen should be the lead contender for Most Improved Player of the Year, averaging 24.9 points per game compared to 14.8 per game with Cleveland last year. He is also shooting 52.0% from the field, 43.3% from three-point range, and 87.0% from the free-throw line. Nobody expected the Jazz to be .500 this season, and here they are, right in the middle of the backend of the playoff standings.
