The 90’s Chicago Bulls were phenomenal, and much of their success on the hardwood can be attributed to their charismatic coach Phil Jackson.
Jackson had the ability to bring the best out of his players, and his off-the-court actions translated to better results on the floor. Reliving one such incident was former Bull John Salley, who played with the team during the ’96 season.
Salley is known for bringing some epic stories from the vault about some of the NBA stars he played with, most notably Michael Jordan. The forward/center had riveting tales to share about the Bulls legend, and now he had a story about the coach who was the architect of the Bulls dynasty and later had the same success with the Los Angeles Lakers soon after.
John Salley Reveals How Phil Jackson Shut Down A Driver Who Objected To Smoking On The Bus
It’s not a novelty to see some of the NBA stars puff a cigar or two, and Phil Jackson was one of them. However, there was a time when it was called out only for the coach to provide a fitting comeback.
The bus driver ferrying the 1996 Bulls unit objected to smoking, and Jackson had a simple response. Salley relived the story on Showtime’s ‘All The Smoke.’
“When we’re on the bus, there’s smoking on the bus.”

The 1996 Chicago Bulls have been looked at as the alpha team who could dominate even some of the teams that played a decade or two later.
Recently, former NBA superstar Byron Scott claimed that Jordan and his team would pip the 2017 Golden State Warriors unit in a seven-game series. He added that the Warriors would perhaps win two games at the most.
“I’d give them two. But I’m going with the Bulls. I’d give them two because you look around that Chicago Bulls team, and you look at the Golden State team, and you know this is always that question – ‘Who gonna guard Steph? Who gonna guard Klay?'”
“Okay, you do know they had three of the best defenders of all time in Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Ron Harper. So they gonna guard the sh*t out of them.”
And it was only made possible by the coach who had his players’ back and instilled a culture that would see them be the best version of themselves, even if it meant letting them puff their stress away.
