Tyrese Maxey had a starring role in the 76ers’ 44-point win over LeBron James and the Lakers tonight, continuing his breakout season. After the game, he spoke about his relationship with LeBron and shared a hilarious workout story where James kept trying to beat Maxey to the gym.
“Workout was at 6. I get there early, like always, by 5:30 to stretch. The next time we worked out at 6, he was there at 5 o’clock. When I walked in, he was in a full sweat. I said, ‘What are you doing?’ He was like, ‘I can’t let you beat me to the gym.’ And I was like, ‘You’re insane.’ That whole week he was trying to get there at 5, but after that workout I was like, ‘You got it man, you win.’”

Maxey and James share a relationship, but it didn’t stop the 22-year-old from saucing up LeBron’s Lakers in a game-leading 31-point outing where he also dropped eight assists.
The 76ers guard also complimented James’ work ethic and drive while talking to the media.
“The numbers, everything speaks for itself. He’s also someone who’s really good at basketball. His work ethic now, (in Year 21), it hasn’t slowed down. He’s still trying to beat me to the gym. He has four MVPs, Finals MVPs, his accolades are through the roof. His want and drive to beat a 22-year-old to the gym who hasn’t done anything, man, hats off to him.”
Maxey is showing All-Star potential this season and has effortlessly replaced the hole James Harden’s departure left on the 76ers. He’s averaging 26.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 6.9 assists so far this season.
He’s looking like a core piece for the future and will likely sign a massive extension with the franchise at the end of this season to be the reason Joel Embiid stays in Philly after the recent speculation about his future.
Tyrese Maxey Stays Undefeated Against LeBron James
Since Maxey was drafted in the 2020 NBA Draft, he has started to build one of the unlikeliest win streaks in the NBA. Maxey has played against James thrice in his career and has yet to lose a game. The streak has barely fleshed out, but it’s cool to be able to say you’re undefeated against LeBron James at any point in your career. The record actually could’ve been worse, but Maxey has missed a few of the matchups in previous seasons.
Maxey averages 17.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists against LeBron, while LeBron averages 29.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists.
LeBron’s record against the 76ers since joining the Lakers has been very poor, with James 1-6 against the Eastern Conference contenders. This seems to be a very poor matchup for the Lakers in the LeBron era, which could also be a result of the 76ers being one of the top teams in the NBA throughout this time.
Their status as contenders doesn’t look to be changing soon, with Joel Embiid continuing to play at an MVP level and Maxey emerging as one of the best-scoring guards in the league. Their tandem has the potential to be even better than the Embiid-Harden duo we saw for the last season and a half. The 76ers are also well-positioned to get stronger with a trade from the assets they got in the Harden deal.
Maxey will be the torch-bearer of the future, but he’ll hope to start his ascent to accolades like LeBron with a title on the 76ers.
