Fadeaway World

Ever since the start of days, some teams and their fans have constantly bragged about their historic success, even if they haven’t even made it to the NBA Finals in over a decade or something like that.

History matters and is a huge part of every team’s identity, but even so, the present is what truly matters the most, with teams preparing themselves for the foreseeable future and try to compete right away.

Since the start of the 21st century, the NBA has seen some great teams build up dynasties and going the distance to win it all, and today, we’re going to let you know about the top 10 franchises of the century.

Remember, 21st century began on January 1, 2001, so we will not count the 1999-2000 Los Angeles Lakers.

Honorable Mention: Philadephia 76ers (1 NBA Finals, 0 Championships)

10. New Jersey Nets

2 NBA Finals, 0 Championships

Led by a young and strong Vince Carter, the New Jersey Nets found their way to back-to-back NBA Finals in 2001 and 2002, but weren’t able to get past the mighty Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, who beat them 4-0 and 4-2 respectively. Ever since, the Nets haven’t even made it to the Conference Finals, and are still going through a rebuilding process.

9. Oklahoma City Thunder

1 NBA Finals, 0 Championships

The Oklahoma City Thunder found pretty much instant success amid their rebuilding process, with the team drafting 3 future MVPs in James Harden, Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant, rounding up the squad with one of the most dominant defenders in the league in Serge Ibaka. Sadly, they weren’t able to materialize such a terrific squad and lost in the Finals against LeBron James and the Miami Heat.

8. Detroit Pistons

2 NBA Finals, 1 Championship

The Detroit Pistons were the team responsible for demolishing the Los Angeles Lakers infamous “Fab Four”, and even though weren’t able to get past the San Antonio Spurs in the next time they were in the Finals, they were one of the most dominant forces in the Eastern Conference between 2000 and 2008.

7. Dallas Mavericks

2 NBA Finals, 1 Championship

The Dallas Mavericks will go down as one of the most incredible Championship squads, with such a cohesionated group that was able to overcome adversity and win it all against all odds despite not being favored. Dirk Nowitzki’s spectacular play was enough to embarrass the Miami Heat’s big three en route to their 1st ever NBA Championship. Before that, they lost in 2006 against Dwyane Wade and Shaq O’Neal 4-2.

6. Boston Celtics

2 NBA Finals, 1 Championship

It’s been a very long time since the Boston Celtics were true Championship contenders, but those days are far behind them with Brad Stevens leading this team back to relevance. Still, the Celtics were able to make it to a couple of NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers, beating them once and being in the losing end in the other.

5. Cleveland Cavaliers

5 NBA Finals, 1 Championship

Amid LeBron James’ surge, the Cleveland Cavaliers became instant Championship contenders, but are also accountable for the most defeats in the Finals ever since. Cleveland made it to the 1st finals in years before being humiliated by the Spurs, and then made it to 4 straight NBA Finals but lost 3 against the almighty Golden State Warriors.

4. Miami Heat

5 NBA Finals, 3 Championships

With LeBron James in town, the Miami Heat were able to go back to Championship contention, but it was Dwyane Wade the one that was a major factor in all 3 of their NBA Championships. But, ever since losing in the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, the team hasn’t been able to get back on their feet for the post-James era.

3. Golden State Warriors

4 NBA Finals, 3 Championships

Steve Kerr’s Golden State Warriors are arguably the best team in NBA history, even breaking the mythical Bulls 72-10 record, even though they wind up blowing a 3-1 lead to lose in the Finals. Golden State has been (and will be) the team to beat for years and it seems like they’re never going to be stopped while Durant and Curry are still on their primes.

2. San Antonio Spurs

5 NBA Finals, 4 Championships

The San Antonio Spurs have been the greatest example of consistency over Gregg Popovich’s time on board, making it to 5 Finals and winning all but one of them, precisely against James and the Heat. Nonetheless, they were able to get back on their feet and make it back to the Finals to dethrone the King and get him out of town for good.

1. Los Angeles Lakers

6 NBA Finals, 4 Championships

And the Los Angeles Lakers have to be by far the most successful franchise of the 21st century, winning 4 Championships under Kobe Bryant’s leadership and Phil Jackson’s tutelage. It’s crazy to wonder how many more Championships could the Lakers have won had Shaq and him managed to find a way to coexist, but hey, it is what it is.
