There’s been a lot of speculation over Trae Young and if he left the USA Basketball team due to the eye injury or something else. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported earlier this month that the Atlanta Hawks guard left the training camp in Las Vegas because of a minor injury with his eye.
Trae Young has to leave Team USA camp because of a minor eye infection, sources said. He’d been playing well on the Select Team last few days.
As an aside with De’Aaron Fox already promoted to senior team, I’m looking forward to Select coach Jeff Van Gundy playing some PG today

However, Windhorst has later revealed when speaking with Ohm Youngmisuk that the decision to leave the squad might have something to do with the uncertainty about his position compared to Derrick White’s?
“Trae Young left the Select Team because his eye was infected, but only after he found out White was getting promoted to the senior team ahead of him,” said Windhorst.
It’s no certainty that Young left because of this, he did have an eye infection that was giving him grief. Derrick White has been outstanding for the team so U.S.A team so far, Greg Popovich has spoken very highly about White’s progress so far since his debut for the San Antonio Spurs in 2017. White took his advantage for the Spurs once Dejounte Murray went down hurt, he’s now close to making the national team.
Trae Young has been one of the most talented rookies in the NBA, whether he would have been selected for the team or not, there’s no doubt that he is in on the right path forward.
