Jrue Holiday may not qualify as an NBA superstar, but he’s arguably one of the best two-way guards in the league with a game that can fit just about anywhere. Speaking on ESPN’s First Take, Andre Iguodala pegged Holiday as not only one of the best guards in the league but also one of the most underrated players in this generation.

“Jrue Holiday is the most underrated player of this generation. I’m going with the Celtics [as the best team in the East]. I saw it at a young age… this guy’s different. Every team he’s been on, he’s maximized their potential… I’m a huge Jrue Holiday fan, I know what he brings to the table, he’s a great balance for them [Celtics].”

Holiday was drafted in 2009 to the 76ers and ascended to stardom in 2013 when he averaged 17.7 points, 8 assists, and 1.6 steals per game as one of the best perimeter defenders in the game. After seven seasons with the Pelicans, Jrue joined the Bucks in 2020 and helped lead them to a title the following summer. Currently, Holiday still often gets overlooked compared to his teammates but he did get some recognition last season when he returned to the All-Star game for the second time in his career.

Is Jrue Holiday Underrated?

Interestingly enough, Andre Iguodala isn’t the only one to see Holiday as underrated. The sentiment is shared by many across the NBA community, including former NBA big man Kendrick Perkins, who admitted on his Twitter that Holiday is the most underrated player in the league.

As a 5x All-Defensive player with a career scoring average of 16.6 points per game, Jrue Holiday has been one of the best two-way guards in the league for years now and, unlike many of his peers, he’s actually got a strong postseason track record to back him up. Despite his status, however, Holiday only has two All-Star appearances to his name, the first of which happened over 10 years ago. This season, the narrative is already starting to change with Jrue in the aftermath of his trade to the Celtics and many believe he has the influence to take them over the top.

Celtics Can Win The East

The Celtics took the ultimate leap this summer by trading vital pieces of their talented core for an older veteran point guard, but it’s a decision that could ultimately pay off. The Celtics were already a 57-win team last season and were just one win away from another trip to the NBA Finals. When you add a proven champion like Holiday and a big-man sharpshooter like Kristaps Porzingis to the mix, it’s tough to see how they could possibly be worse.

Of course, the ultimate key to success for the Celtics is Jayson Tatum. If Tatum stays healthy and can elevate his game to the next level, there will be nothing stopping this team from making a run in the East next spring. While competing with the Bucks and Heat will be challenging, there isn’t a team in the league right now that’s better from top to bottom. 2024 could very well belong to the Celtics.
