For years, people have said that Dwight Howard might as well be the first Hall of Famer not to have a fanbase rooting for him.
He didn’t leave the Orlando Magic in the best of terms, then had a failed one-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers, then wanted to leave the Houston Rockets, and the list goes on and on.
But, fast-forward to today, and he might’ve done just enough to redeem himself in the eyes of Lakers fans.
After all, he did come back, was humble, earned his minutes, contributed, and helped the team win the 2020 NBA Championship in one of the toughest years in franchise history given Kobe Bryant’s passing.
Now, after a year with the Philadelphia 76ers, Dwight is back at the STAPLES Center for the third time, and hopefully, until the end of his career.
So, when asked about it, Howard said that he was upset about not being able to come back last season but that he’s glad that he’s got a chance to return this year:
“It was very upsetting at first, not being able to return next season,” Howard told Harrison Faigen of Silver Screen & Roll, as quoted by ClutchPoints. “… But I stayed happy, and now I’m back here with the Lake Show.”
Howard infamously tweeted that he was going to run it back with the Lakers before deleting it and joining the Philadelphia 76ers.
But after all those ups and downs, it seems like somehow, he continues to find his way back to LA:
“I just think that like, we’re supposed to be together. “Something about the Lakers and myself, we’re supposed to be together,” Howard concluded.
Howard has been through a lot over his career but that clearly thought him a lesson and humbled him over the past couple of years. Hopefully, this will be the last stop of his days in the NBA.
