While that decision may have come as a surprise to some, it seems as though this is part of a bigger plan for the Miami Heat. Adrian Wojnarowski has stated that the decision to pick up the option could be a “possible precursor” to sending the guard to Toronto in a sign-and-trade for Kyle Lowry.

While Goran Dragic is a good point guard, it seems as though the Miami Heat believe that Kyle Lowry is an upgrade. With a Lowry sign-and-trade, the Miami Heat would get a star, while the Toronto Raptors would get a replacement point guard in Goran Dragic, rather than letting Lowry leave for nothing.
It remains to be seen if Kyle Lowry even goes to the Miami Heat or whether he picks another destination. A prior report suggested that the New Orleans Pelicans and the Dallas Mavericks could be two other destinations for him, though the Miami Heat were listed in that report as well.
