The New York Knicks have been the epitome of dysfunction for years now, much to the displeasure of ESPN analyst and New York sports superfan, Stephen A. Smith.
Usually, Stephen A. has lamented the actions of his team, often drawing laughs with his hyperbolic reactions. And while he did state he would’ve preferred the team draft a guard, Smith did seem pleased with the choice.
I like Obi Toppin a lot. I really really do. He’s from NY. He’s gonna rep the city. I have no doubt. But the Knicks needed a guard! pic.twitter.com/Kf39n5YNsl

Overall, there was widespread support for the pick — a stark change from what we’re used to seeing from this team. Whether it’s landing low in the draft lottery, making questionable selections, or failing to land free agents, the team hasn’t had had very good fortunes over the past few years.
Hopefully, Obi Toppin will be a guy that helps to finally turn things around. He averaged 21.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game for Dayton in 2019-20, while shooting 63.3 percent from the field, 39.0 percent from beyond the arc, and 70.2 percent from the free-throw line.
Best of all, he’s a New York native, having grown up in Ossining.
Alongside Kevin Knox, Mitchell Robinson, and RJ Barrett, real optimism is stirring for the franchise. We’ll see before long if it becomes something bigger.
