Steve Kerr spoke after the Golden State Warriors lost in embarrassing fashion to the Memphis Grizzlies 144-93. He noted that the loss was a humbling experience, and the Grizzlies just bested them on every end of the court, starting from the first quarter. He praised the Grizzlies for their performance and underlined the work that needed to be done by the Warriors to bounce back.
“It was just a humbling night all around. They took it to us. They were great. We just couldn’t get anything going in the first quarter. They took us out of their stuff. They did a great job defensively. And everything just went south from there. Give them credit, but we got a lot of work to do.”
Kerr also spoke about other issues as well, including the impact of playing Dennis Schroder last night, along with the lessons he plans to take from this game.
What to learn from last night:
“Humbling means what it means. You lose by 51, that’s humbling. What I know about this team – this is the second time we’ve been blown out… I know who we are, I know what our team is about. I know we’ve got competitors.”
“And I know we’re going to bounce back and we’re going to regroup. Not concerned about that. But we have a lot of work to do to learn how to execute under pressure, take care of the ball, and get good shots. We’ll regroup tomorrow in Minneapolis and have a practice, and get ready to go Saturday.”
How Dennis Schroder’s integration impacted the game:
“Dennis looked like a guy on a new team. It’s always very difficult to get traded mid-season and play with a brand new group and have different terminology… They did a great job on Steph. Denying him everywhere, making every catch difficult.”
“This was about Memphis, they’ve been one of the hottest teams in the league. And they played a great game. They went 27-48 [from deep]. But it was their defense early on that took us out of what we were trying to do. And I give them credit for it, and we’ve lost 9-11. We’re reeling and we’ve gotta get back, clearly.”
The Warriors were shambolic on the night, with all of their players underdelivering. Stephen Curry had perhaps the worst game of his NBA career, with just two points (0-7 FG), three rebounds, one assist, one steal, one block, and two turnovers. New arrival Dennis Schroder had a nightmare start to his Warriors career, with five points (2-12 FG), two rebounds, five assists, and four turnovers.
The starters on the Warriors combined to score an embarrassing 26 points. The scoring leaders for the Warriors were Brandin Podziemski with 21 points (9-13 FG), and Andrew Wiggins with 19 points (6-11 FG). In fact, only two other players had double-digit figures for the Warriors, with Kyle Anderson and Jonathan Kuminga both putting up 11 points each.
The bad news for the Warriors is that this is their worst performance all year. The good news is that there is nowhere for them to go but up. Steve Kerr must get the team playing the right way once again. It will be a long and hard road back to the top for the Warriors, who are now 14-12 and sit in 10th place in the West.
They get their first chance at redemption on Saturday night at 8 PM, as they play against the Timberwolves away from home. This game has to be considered a must-win for the Warriors.
