LeBron James keeps breaking records even when he doesn’t mean to. The current Los Angeles Lakers star saw how a 2003-04 LeBron James Upper Deck rookie Patch Parallel card sold at auction for $1.8 million at Goldin Auctions on Sunday. This price set a new record for modern-day cards, from 1980 or later. Before Sunday, the previous record belonged to a Mike Trout rookie card sold for $922,500.

With collectors seeing their cards as the new version of stocks, players now are making sure they own a piece of their future.

“If we were talking about a T206 [Honus] Wagner, or a 1952 [Mickey] Mantle, it probably wouldn’t be that much news,” said Ken Goldin, founder of Goldin Auctions, via ESPN. “But when you’re talking about a card that was literally produced 17 years ago and is for a guy still playing in the NBA, it’s just shocking news to a lot of people. It’s really where my particular industry has been going for several years.”

LeBron reacted to the news and he claimed he had more rookie cards that could earn him more money if he decided to sell them.

“Guess who else has a couple of those exact ones too,” the King commented on a Sportscenter’s post.

The card was sold to Lob.com CEO Leore Avidar.

This shows how impressive LeBron’s career has been and how impactful he’s been for basketball, the world of sports in general and pop culture. LeBron James is an icon and everything with his name will draw a lot of attention and will generate money.
