There is no doubt that Jayson Tatum is finally showing he can become a superstar in the NBA given the good season he’s having with the Boston Celtics. The young player has racked up any kind of comments about his game and he doesn’t plan to stop there.
On Thursday’s edition of ESPN’s First Take, Stephen A. Smith didn’t miss his chance to praise the 21-year-old player who is getting better and better by the day. While discussing what player under 21 they would choose if they were general managers, Smith was quick to point out why Tatum is someone to be scared of.
Jay Williams picked Dallas Mavericks’ ‘basketball genius’ Luka Doncic, while Max Kellerman chose New Orleans Pelicans standout Zion Williamson and the fact that he’s doing very good things at a younger age. Smith, on the other hand, explained why he’d pick Tatum over any other player in the league right now.
“Ladies and gentlemen, Jayson Tatum is 21 years old. My god, is he coming. He’ll probably be player of the month. The 30+ points performances we’ve seen from him — he’s shooting considerably better from 3 and he’s shooting better from the free-throw line. The handle is there and unlike Luka, the defense is also good and he’s around the same age.
“Jayson Tatum is scratching the surface of what we are on the verge of witnessing. And when I look at him, his ball-handle skills, his side step, his step back, his 3. He can do it all and he plays defense.”
Several people thought Tatum wasn’t going to live up to the expectations after last season and the fiasco it was for the Celtics. However, this season is the complete opposite for the young player, who is leading the C’s to be one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.

In his last 5 games, he’s scored 177 points with 41 rebounds and 10 assists, demonstrating he’s ready to be one of the future faces of the league.
Jayson is averaging 23.3 points, 7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game with the Celtics, shooting 45.3% from the field, 39.8% from deep and 82.2% from the free-throw line.
While some people, like Smith, say Tatum is coming, others assure that he’s already arrived.
