This is no doubt a frustrating experience for the Spurs players, as their sleep was interrupted by this loud fire alarm. Not to mention, before they found out that it was a false alarm, they would probably have been panicked and scared by the situation. Far from the ideal way to spend your night before your first game of the season.

The Spurs traveled from San Antonio to Dallas to play their first game of the season, as they take on the defending Western Conference champions, the Dallas Mavericks. The battle between the two heavyweight Texas teams will see two of Europe’s best in Luka Doncic and Victor Wembanyama face off.

Both players are coming off great seasons. Doncic averaged 33.9 points, 9.8 assists, 9.2 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game as he led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last year.

As for Wembanyama, he steamrolled his competition while averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.6 blocks to win Rookie of the Year and finish second in the race for Defensive Player of the Year.

The Mavericks are expected to be top contenders in the West this year, whereas the San Antonio Spurs are expected to be a middling team that will miss the playoffs. While Victor Wembanyama has spoken about his desire to compete at a higher level this season, the Spurs just don’t have the roster to do so in a stacked Western Conference.

Wemby Take A Massive Leap This Year

Many expect Victor Wembanyama to take a big step in his development this season. Wemby himself addressed this in a recent interview with ESPN, talking about the extra hours he put in after he finished his international duties with the French national team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Wembanyama worked on the simple stuff, such as his ball handling, movement, and scoring, asking former NBA star Jamal Crawford for help. On top of that, he has added a lot of muscle onto his frame, gaining 25 pounds heading into the new season.

If these steps lead to a visible improvement, Wembanyama could become an All-Star and All-NBA player next season. Winning MVP may be a bit difficult, as it isn’t just dependent on individual performances, but also a player’s team record. And given that the Spurs are expected to be under .500 this season, winning MVP is unlikely.

With the Spurs acquiring veteran point guard Chris Paul, Wemby is in good hands. Paul has made a career of elevating the big men he plays with, be it DeAndre Jordan, Deandre Ayton, or Clint Capela. And none of those players had the immense skill and versatility that Wembanyama possesses.

The pairing of CP3 and Wemby will be box office, and Spurs fans will get to enjoy the young sensation and the veteran guard make magic together this NBA season. The Spurs tip off against the Mavericks tomorrow night, so stay tuned to Fadeaway World for news and instant analysis from the game.
