Golden State Warriors guard Moses Moody is adept at drawing charges, and his AAU coach in the sixth grade might deserve some credit for that. During an appearance on The Young Man and The Three podcast, Moody spoke about how he took advantage of his coach’s offer of $1 for every charge taken for his players.

“The whole team, whoever take a charge they get a dollar,” Moody said. “So yeah, once I heard that, I’m trying to get a charge every play. I’m trying to get some Skittles at the vending machine after the game.”

Host Tommy Alter wondered how much Moody ended up making, and it turns out he made a lot.

“He might even stop doing it ’cause I was running up the check,” Moody added.

Moody’s AAU coach wasn’t the only victim either.

“When I got to high school, my trainer, Jimmy, he did it with the high school team,” Moody stated. “They said whoever got the most charges, he would take them out to dinner. Like a steak dinner and stuff after the season. And I won that too. So, if I got a reason, I’ll do it.”

Anything for some extra cash and a nice steak dinner. While that might not be the ideal kind of motivation, it did prove to be helpful for Moody in his NBA career. The Warriors’ coaches and fans love his hustle and willingness to put his body on the line.

Moody has now turned into a quality two-way guard in the NBA. The Warriors signed him to a three-year, $39 million extension in 2024, and he went on to average 9.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game in 2024-25.

Moody was inserted into the starting lineup for the final 28 games of the regular season, and the Warriors went 21-7 in them. He would later lose that spot in the lineup in the playoffs, though, and it will be interesting to see his role come the start of the 2025-26 season.

The Warriors are the only team that hasn’t made a move yet this offseason, but some signings are expected once Jonathan Kuminga’s future is resolved. We’ll get a better idea then on Moody’s potential role.
