Udonis Haslem, the Miami Heat legend known for his veteran leadership, recently went on a passionate rant on his show “Real OGs,” where he emphasized what it truly means to be an “OG” in the game. Haslem, who has spent his career mentoring younger players, didn’t hold back in calling out those who claim the title without putting in the necessary work and sacrifice.

“First thing OGs should do is sacrifice. Stop calling yourself an OG if you don’t wanna sacrifice. You can’t call yourself an OG if you don’t wanna sacrifice. And sometimes that come with motherf***ing money. But if you’re OG in this game, then hopefully you should have some f***ing money by now.”

“So you should be having some f***ing money right now. So the first and foremost as an OG, if you wanna say you’re an OG and you wanna start teaching these guys about being accountable and start teaching these guys about habits and start teaching these guys about sacrificing, then first, motherf***er, you got to sacrifice.”

“Whether that be your minutes, whether that be your playing time, whether that be your money, whether that be just your time you spend with your family where you take some free time, or you take a guy to lunch, or you take some free time and you go play motherf***ing Call of Duty, whatever the f**k these young motherf***ers wanna do, just so you could take yourself and be in their world and bank that equity and build that relationship with them.”

“If you ain’t doing that and you ain’t willing to do none of that as an OG, you ain’t no f***ing OG and stop saying that. I think we throw that shit around and we use that OG, I wanna be an OG. Do you really? Because if you don’t want to sacrifice you don’t.”

"Stop calling yourself OG if you don't want to sacrifice… [If you want to] start teaching these guys about sacrifices, then first motherf*cker you got to sacrifice, whether that be your minutes, playing time, money."

He made it clear that being an OG—someone who is respected and looked up to by younger players—requires more than just experience; it requires selflessness and a willingness to give up something for the greater good of the team and the development of others. Haslem pointed out that true OGs should be in a position where they can afford to make sacrifices, whether it’s in terms of money, time, or even playing minutes.

He implies that veterans who’ve been around long enough to be considered OGs should have secured their financial stability. With that stability comes the responsibility to use their resources—be it money, experience, or time—to guide the next generation.

For Udonis Haslem, sacrificing as an OG might mean spending less time on the court, giving up personal time, or even engaging with younger players in their interests, like playing video games, to build a relationship. Haslem reminds everyone that being a real OG is about putting others first and making the necessary sacrifices to lead by example.
