Anthony Edwards was in attendance as the U.S. women’s table tennis team took on Brazil in an Olympic game. Edwards was seen clapping, showing support and enthusiasm toward his fellow countrywomen and Olympians from the stands, as Lily Zhang of the USA took on Bruna Takahashi of Brazil.

This appearance at the table tennis game comes after Stephen Curry instigated Edwards into challenging the women’s table tennis team. Edwards hilariously claimed that he would at least be able to get one point off against the best players in the country, as all athletes were on the boat for the Olympics opening ceremony.
While his appearance at this game was good fun, Edwards will have to shift his focus to Team USA‘s next game against South Sudan. He didn’t feature much during Team USA’s opening game against Serbia, coming off the bench with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal.
Steve Kerr is expected to shift the lineup to incorporate more wings, which could mean Edwards starting or even playing big minutes off the bench. His size is perhaps the biggest concern when it comes to playing him against South Sudan, but he more than makes up for it with his defensive presence and commitment.
Edwards claimed prior to the Olympics that he was the number one option for Team USA. But he hasn’t been considered a guaranteed starter for Steve Kerr’s team as of yet. Of course, this could change at any point, as Kerr does rotate and try different lineups during games.
Has Edwards Fallen Out Of Favor With Kerr?
Anthony Edwards may have ruffled some feathers with his first-option comments, including Steve Kerr. Kerr apparently ripped into Edwards during a practice session, questioning how a player performing like Edwards was earning $50 million per season. Perhaps Kerr was trying to motivate Edwards, but that was incredibly harsh from the Warriors and Team USA coach,
Edwards is coming off his best season in the NBA yet, averaging 25.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists. He led the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in 20 years and showed why he is one of the bright young players in the NBA who is primed for superstardom.
At the Olympics, Edwards isn’t just trying to help Team USA extend their gold medal streak to five straight. For Ant, he will be looking to avenge his poor outing with Team USA at last year’s FIBA World Cup, where he and the team were eliminated by Germany in the semi-finals, and didn’t even earn a podium finish.
Edwards can provide the team with some energy and athleticism that no other player on the team can. His youth combined with his innate desire to win and hunger make him one of Team USA’s most dangerous weapons. But it is up to Steve Kerr when and how that weapon is used, or if it stays holstered for much of the tournament.
