LeBron James usually tries to lie low at this time of the year, but between his podcast with JJ Redick and his mysterious activity on social media, eyes are once again turning his way. For reasons currently unknown, fans caught LeBron going on a bizarre unfollow spree that prompted theories of all kinds.

It started with Ben Simmons, who has no obvious personal connection to LeBron. After years, LeBron decided to sever his social media ties to the former Nets All-Star.

LeBron followed it up by unfollowing Kendrick Perkins, his former teammate and ally who has been very critical of his behavior recently.

Curiously, Blake Griffin was the third and final player unfollowed by LeBron. Fans were confused after this one because nobody really knows what made him decide to cut off contact now.

LeBron James, 39 years old, has never even been one to act petty on social media but he’s not above severing ties or outright ignoring those that he finds disagreeable. That’s been his strategy with infamous FOX reporter Skip Bayless.

In the case of Kendrick Perkins, a 1x NBA champion for the Celtics, it wasn’t that long ago that he called out LeBron for trying to take the spotlight away from the NBA Finals and some fans theorized that this was his way of silencing the former NBA big man.

“Here we go again, Bron weaseling his way into somebody else’s moment,” said Perkins. “This is not about you! Your team is at home. This is about the Mavs and the Celtics, but yet you’re so mad and disappointed that you’re not Kyrie Irving’s running mate anymore. Here we go again.”

Now, LeBron won’t have to worry about seeing his controversial opinions anymore as he navigates the final chapter of his career.

As for the other names on the list, it’s unclear why James would unfollow them now of all times but maybe it was a spur-of-the-moment decision after he saw them on his timeline. Either way, what’s done is done now and it’s unlikely to be something he puts any more thought into beyond tonight.

With an active coaching search underway and a decision to make about his player option for next season, LeBron cannot afford any distractions right now, and he’ll do whatever it takes to make the path ahead as easy as possible.
