In a chat with Nuggets insider Harrison Wind, Nikola Jokic revealed his true thoughts on the yearly MVP race. According to the Joker, the whole conversation has gotten out of hand, and it’s led to major toxicity from all sides.

“I think the whole MVP conversation is getting out of control,” said Jokic. “I think I’m playing good basketball… I think a couple of guys deserve to have the award.”

As a 2x MVP winner and a top-five MVP candidate for the past four years, Nikolas Jokic is on the cusp of making history in 2024 if he wins the award for the third time in his career. Across the league, fans, players, and experts are still split on Jokic and whether he truly ranks in the same tier as other 3x MVPs like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Nevertheless, he is leading the latest polls and not everyone is happy about it.

Over the past few months alone, the Joker has been the target of major disrespect from both fans and former players alike. Yesterday, Kevin Hart begged the NBA to stop giving him trophies and Gilbert Arenas has said that Jokic is the “worst MVP” of all time.

Dating back to last season’s battle with Joel Embiid, the Joker has been involved in some tight and borderline toxic MVP debates, and it seems he’s over the whole thing. Unfortunately for Nikola, his place atop the MVP ladder this year means he will once again be front and center in the endless conversation.

Nikola Jokic Is On The Verge Of His Next MVP

The Joker has been in constant scrutiny over his unexpected rise to stardom, and up until his championship victory last summer, many were still unconvinced that he was as good as the numbers said he was.

This season, Jokic has responded with another masterpiece of a season for the Nuggets. Through 77 games this year, he’s averaging 26.6 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 9.0 assists per game on 58% shooting. He’s got his team first in the West right now, in position to hold home-court advantage through the entire West playoffs.

But with as good as Jokic has been, he’s made it clear that MVPs are not his priority, nor are they his motivation. Jokic actively campaigned against himself last season and he’s doing the same this year through comments like these and shining the spotlight on stars like Luka Doncic, who is quickly gaining steam in the MVP race.

As the consensus best player in the world right now, Jokic’s place atop the player pyramid is no longer a question and he’s got nothing left to prove in the NBA. All he wants now is to play the game without theatrics and for his dominance to not become a source of debate and division in the NBA community.

When Jokic wins his next MVP, it will put him in that rare category of NBA legends, and it will be impossible for even his most passionate haters to deny his status as one of the all-time greats. But no matter what the people are saying, Jokic will never get caught up in the awards, and his only goal is to chase the Larry O’Brien trophy.
