With 35-year-old Stephen Curry still playing like one of the best guards in the West, the Golden State Warriors are determined to put him in the best possible position to win. So, coming off an uneventful trade deadline for Golden State, rumor has it that they are looking at making their next big move this summer, with an interest in recruiting big-name wing players LeBron James, Kevin Durant, or even Paul George if afforded the opportunity.
“If [LeBron James] has wandering eyes in the summer, or if Kevin Durant does, or if Paul George is going to be a free agent at this point,” said Anthony Slater on 95.7 ‘The Game.’ “The Warriors will be in on that conversation because I think they want a legitimate star wing next to Steph Curry.”
Amid the ongoing struggles of Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson, it’s no secret that the Warriors are thin in the frontcourt and they’ll need to upgrade if they want any chance of advancing in the West.
Currently, it is unknown which players will be available in July, but both James and George could hit free agency if they opt out of the final year of their deals. If the Warriors can clear the salary and retain Klay Thompson for a modest agreement, they could make room to add at least one big-name player without giving up their core three.
At this point, whatever the cost, the Warriors have to consider any opportunity to mix things up. Even at the height of a five-game win streak, the Dubs are just 10th in the West with an uphill climb to even get as far as 8th. Meanwhile, Stephen Curry continues to have another All-Star campaign with averages of 28.0 points, 4.9 assists, and 4.4 rebounds per game on 46.4% shooting.
Golden State Warriors Already Tried To Trade For LeBron James
Surprisingly, the Dubs already attempted to pair Steph with King James. Before the trade deadline passed this month, the Warriors apparently tried to convince the Lakers (and LeBron himself) to make the trade before they were eventually shut down and all talks ceased. It was Pelinka the Lakers who vetoed the idea and ultimately denied the Warriors their chance at another superteam. LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul, even put out a statement to kill all the rumors associated with a James trade.
This summer, the Warriors may try again to get LeBron on their roster and it might not take a whole lot given how much the Lakers have struggled recently. But even if not, they have other options to consider. From Paul George to Pascal Siakam and Tobias Harris, there will be varying degrees of talent on the market this year and the Warriors will have to pick the right one if they want to salvage what’s left of the Stephen Curry era.
But even now, as the West continues to improve, the Dubs still have a chance to make some noise and this will be the ultimate test to see how far they are from true title contention. With just one more big piece, they could relive their former glory days like it’s 2017 and the anticipation is only rising as we get closer to free agency.
