Victor Wembanyama is already showing signs of stardom in the NBA, but the jury is still out on his ultimate basketball potential. Speaking in an interview with Mark Medina, former NBA defensive star Metta Sandiford-Artest became the latest player to drop their assessment of Wemby, and he believes that the young star is on track to be the first to break Wilt’s 100-game scoring record.
“He’s unbelievable. He reminds me of Wilt. He’s coming in dominating, but not quite ready,” said Artest. “No center has ever had the same skill set that Wembanyama has. Once he gets a little bit bigger and continues to get smarter works on his game and continues to do yoga, he will score 101 points. I won’t be surprised if he scores 95% of the points at some point in time. I think it’ll take him five to eight years to score 101 points.”
Wilt’s 100-point game is often considered one of the NBA’s most unbreakable records. But between the rising skill level of players league-wide, and an overall uptick in scoring, the idea of a 100-point game in modern times has become much more plausible. At his best, Victor Wembanyama is a prime candidate to one day surpass that mark.
Wembanyama Is A Rising Star
With averages of 20.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game, Victor Wembanyama is the NBA’s front-runner for Rookie of the Year and he looks like a star in the making. At 7’4″ with an even longer wingspan, Wemby is unlike anything we’ve ever seen in the NBA and he has put his talents on full display over the first 41 games.
As one of the league’s premier two-way bigs, Victor is already on the fast track to legendary status but he’ll have to start winning games before anyone can take him seriously as a generational icon of the sport. With the Spurs at 15th in the West, a lot of work needs to be done for Victor and the Spurs but they are building something special there that could really take off with a few more years of development.
NBA’s Scoring Rampage
While a 101-point game might have sounded implausible a few years ago, it doesn’t look as unlikely now given what we’ve seen over the past few years. As the NBA’s three-point revolution has developed, the rate of scoring has increased drastically, to the point where 150-point games are becoming a common occurrence for teams. Individually, we’ve also seen a number of ridiculous high-scoring performances, including a 70-point game from Joel Embiid, a 73-point performance from Luka Doncic, and a 62-point night from Devin Booker.
In a few years, with more time for the offense to rise, 80 or 90-point games might start to happen as scoring reaches its ultimate peak. As for a 101-point performance, it’s going to be tough for any player to score like that but if anybody has a chance, it’s Victor. His ability to score anywhere in multiple ways on the court makes him especially suited for a scoring explosion and it’s only a matter of time before he breaks out for another history-making performance.
