Darvin Ham praised D’Angelo Russell’s professional approach amid ongoing trade rumors. Ham emphasized Russell’s impressive skill set and his commitment to being a consummate professional despite external uncertainties. In a recent game against the Portland Trail Blazers, Russell showcased a complete performance, excelling on both ends of the court and contributing significantly to the Lakers’ 134-110 victory.

“I mean, just his skill set. First of all, he’s done a wonderful job being a pro about all of it. So much stuff that we can’t control. And that said, he’s just really locked in on his game, focus on ways he can help the team, communicating, competing. “

“Tonight, you know, was one of the most complete games I’ve seen him play since he’s been back in a Laker uniform. He was great on defense, great with his activity, great on and off the ball offensively.”

Ham highlighted Russell’s defensive prowess, offensive contributions, and overall activity on and off the ball during the game. Despite trade talks swirling around the talented guard, Russell remains focused on helping the team and delivering exceptional performances. The Lakers’ recent win against the Trail Blazers was a testament to Russell’s dedication and effectiveness, according to Ham.

“Whenever we play with pace, whenever we push the ball, we’re consistent with our running habits, we’re forceful with our running habits, all types of things are gonna open up.”

“And again, we stress a multitude of ways to put pressure on a defense and early in transition, really starting with great defense. But even still, the other team makes a field goal, getting the ball out quick, rushing it up the floor, getting into what we need to get into in order to be able to explore multiple options.”

Transitioning to the keys of the Lakers’ offensive success, Ham emphasized the importance of playing with pace and consistently pushing the ball. He noted that maintaining running habits and being forceful in transition opens up numerous opportunities for the team’s offensive players, especially benefiting D’Angelo Russell. The Lakers’ recent offensive improvements have been evident in their transition game, scoring 35 fast-break points against the Trail Blazers.

Ham stressed the significance of great defense as a starting point for effective transitions, underlining the team’s commitment to communication and activity on the court. Despite the Lakers‘ current .500 record and ninth place in the Western Conference, their offensive resurgence, particularly in transition, has been a positive aspect.

When the Lakers excel, it’s often attributed to their ability to get stops, control the boards, and consistently beat opponents downcourt for transition opportunities – a facet they execute as well as any team in the NBA.

There Was Something Wrong With D’Angelo Russell Despite Massive Performance

D’Angelo Russell’s standout performance in the Los Angeles Lakers’ convincing 134-110 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers was overshadowed by an apparent air of melancholy surrounding the 27-year-old guard. Despite a game-high 34 points, 8 assists, 1 rebound, and 2 blocks, Russell exhibited a somber demeanor on the bench after the game, prompting speculation about his emotional state and the potential for a significant change.

In his postgame interview, Russell’s words hinted at a reflective sentiment, as he discussed childhood dreams and the joy of executing plays with LeBron James. The peculiar tone of his responses fueled speculation about his future with the Lakers.

Observations from the locker room further fueled rumors, with reports describing an unusually quiet atmosphere. The collective mood, coupled with Russell’s emotional demeanor, led to speculation that something significant might be transpiring behind the scenes.

Trade rumors have been swirling around D’Angelo Russell throughout the 2023-24 NBA season, with the Lakers reportedly exploring options to improve their roster. The team allegedly tried to trade Russell, along with Jalen Hood-Schifino and draft picks, for Dejounte Murray. While talks stalled, the trade deadline looms, suggesting that further negotiations might be on the horizon.

Additionally, the Lakers reportedly considered trading Russell to the Golden State Warriors for Andrew Wiggins earlier in the season. As trade talks continue and the February 8 deadline approaches, uncertainty surrounds Russell’s future with the Lakers, contributing to the emotional undertone observed after the recent game against the Trail Blazers.

Whether Russell’s apparent sadness is a fleeting emotion or an indication of significant changes remains to be seen, but the star guard’s impressive performances make any potential departure impactful for the Lakers.
