Recent reports suggest that the Los Angeles Lakers explored trade possibilities with the Golden State Warriors, offering D’Angelo Russell in exchange for Andrew Wiggins. Jason Timpf, sharing insights on the ‘Hoops Tonight’ podcast, disclosed that the Lakers initiated discussions with the Warriors about a potential swap involving the two players.

“I heard that the Lakers called Golden State at some point and offered D’Angelo Russell for Andrew Wiggins.” (9:15)

While such trade rumors can create speculation and excitement among fans, Timpf expressed skepticism about the likelihood of this particular deal materializing. He argued that D’Angelo Russell is considered a superior asset compared to Andrew Wiggins. Furthermore, Wiggins’ performance has been subpar this season, making the Lakers less inclined to pursue such a trade.

D’Angelo Russell, who has been in the spotlight due to trade rumors, has been performing well on the court. With averages of 15.8 points and 6.1 assists per game, along with efficient shooting percentages of 47.4% from the field and 40.6% from beyond the arc, Russell has showcased his value. The Lakers, currently in the 10th position with a 21-22 record, have seen Russell’s positive contributions in recent games.

On the other hand, Andrew Wiggins, in the midst of his worst statistical season, has struggled to make a significant impact for the Warriors. With averages of 11.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, coupled with shooting percentages of 42.2% from the field and 29.6% from three-point range, Wiggins has faced criticism. Additionally, his performance has been a disappointment considering his lucrative four-year, $109 million contract.

The financial aspect is also noteworthy, as Russell’s salary of $17.3 million is comparatively lower than Wiggins’ significant $24.3 million earnings. Despite the intriguing nature of trade talks, it remains to be seen whether the Lakers and Warriors will move forward with any transaction involving D’Angelo Russell and Andrew Wiggins.

The Lakers Should Not Do This Trade At Any Cost

The Los Angeles Lakers should exercise caution and avoid a potential trade scenario that involves sending D’Angelo Russell to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Andrew Wiggins. Russell has been showcasing stellar performances lately, proving to be not only a valuable asset but also one of the Lakers’ most reliable shooters.

In recent games, Russell has displayed impressive offensive capabilities, averaging 15.8 points and 6.1 assists per game. His shooting efficiency, with a field goal percentage of 47.4% and a three-point shooting percentage of 40.6%, underscores his importance to the Lakers’ offensive arsenal. Given the team’s need for reliable scoring and perimeter shooting, letting go of Russell could diminish these crucial elements.

On the other hand, while Andrew Wiggins does provide defensive coverage, it might not be enough to compensate for his inconsistencies on the offensive end. Wiggins is experiencing a notably challenging season and is having major shooting struggles, raising concerns about his offensive contribution.

The Lakers, aiming to bolster their roster for a playoff push, should prioritize acquiring players who enhance their shooting and defensive capabilities. In this context, trading D’Angelo Russell for Andrew Wiggins might not align with the team’s needs and goals. If the Lakers are indeed considering moving Russell, exploring alternative trade options that address their specific requirements, such as shooters with solid defensive skills, would be a more prudent course of action.
