The WNBA season is in full swing and teams across the league are racing to secure the top seeds in their conference. In Chicago, the Sky are just looking to break even after a horrendous 5-13 start has them down to 12th in the standings (fifth in the Eastern Conference). In their latest loss against the Washington Mystics, however, Angel Reese made headlines for all the wrong reasons in an outburst caught on camera that has been watched by countless fans around the world.

The score was tied at 77 with less than a minute to go in the fourth quarter. After the Sky challenged a loose-ball foul, the players were pulled back to the bench, where Reese is seen having a moment on the sidelines. It’s unknown what prompted her to slap the clipboard as she did, but it could have been a show of frustration for Reese, who finished the game with 22 points, 15 rebounds, and four assists in the loss (81-79). She led her team in scoring, rebounding, and minutes played (36).

The coach in the clip appears to be Ann Crosby, Vice President of Basketball Operations, Strength and Conditioning. It looks like she might have been trying to show something to Angel on her clipboard, but the WNBA star wasn’t having it. Fortunately, instead of making a scene of the incident, Crosby stayed quiet and merely picked up her clipboard to avoid any escalation.

It’s unknown if this behavior is common for Reese, but she does have a notoriously short fuse. Back in June, she was ready to fight the entire Connecticut team after getting her hair pulled on a rebound. She also has a nasty feud with Caitlin Clark, which turned physical last season. In the case of this latest incident, it appears Reese let her anger take control again against one of her own team’s coaches.

Reese was drafted seventh overall in 2024 and ascended to stardom almost immediately. In her rookie campaign last year, she made the All-Star team with averages of 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game on 39.1% shooting. She was second in Rookie of the Year voting, but despite her presence, the Sky finished sixth in the East (last place).

This season, Angel is on an identical track both in her stats and her team’s performance. In 17 games so far, she’s averaging 12.6 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game on 40.9% shooting. Meanwhile, her team is struggling to stay competitive as they head toward another losing season.

Being unable to break the struggles, it’s not surprising that Reese is feeling frustrated with her situation. Despite doing everything in her power, they are still no closer to contention, and this season is already slipping away.

The good news is that Angel is still just 23 years old and at the very beginning of her career. She has plenty of time to find the success she’s after and build a lasting legacy in the WNBA. For now, however, she must be patient and control her emotions while the Chicago Sky continue to try to build a roster that can compete for a title.
