35-year-old Patrick Beverley has been a bit of a journeyman in his NBA career. On his sixth team in 11 years, Bev has more experience than most players on what it’s like to change teams and swap jerseys in quick succession. Speaking on his podcast, Beverley recently opened up on player movement and specified what the unofficial start of trade season is like for guys who may be on the move.
“It’s about that time, though. That trade talk time. If you’re an expiring contract for any player in the league and you’re not playing well… this time, until Valentine’s Day, you’re on Twitter. You’re seeing what motherf*ckers are gathering together. You try not to hear the noise but you hear it.”

If things are going well, teams will typically try to keep their group together except for a few upgrades. But the NBA is a business and no player is truly safe from a change of scenery. In the case of Beverley, he could find himself on the trade block again if Philadelphia can secure a deal that increases their chances for a postseason run.
Trades Are Hard Reality Of The NBA
Most professional players understand that the risk of being traded is always present but it can still take guys off-guard when they are dealt without any warning. It happened to Tyrese Haliburton in 2022 when the Kings suddenly traded him away and it also happened to Russell Westbrook when he was traded from the Lakers mid-way through last season. In the case of Patrick Beverley, his unexpected trade from the Timberwolves last season could have changed the entire trajectory of his career but he’s found a way to make the most of it.
“You get a new contract, you hear the talks. You’ve been benched, you’ve been demoted,” said Bev on the podcast. “You gotta look at a lot of stuff around this time of year: health, contract year, do we want to pay this guy that number? It’s that time of year where mf’s don’t wanna accept it but somebody’s getting traded!”
This season, we haven’t had a single trade going into the New Year, but the rumors have already started. With so many teams across the league in search of upgrades to their roster, it’s only a matter of time before an agreement gets made and it’s why every tradeable player will be watching their back as they prepare for the worst.
2023-24 NBA Trade Rumors
This season has seen no shortage of activity on the rumor mill. Dating back to the summer, the Raptors are a team largely considered to be on the verge of a rebuild and it could mean that players like Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby, and Gary Trent Jr. are available for the highest bidder. There’s also the Chicago Bulls, who have been playing better of late without All-Star guard Zach LaVine. Most recently, even Hawks guard Dejounte Murray has been included in some trade talks involving the Los Angeles Lakers.
For now, while no trade is imminent, the thought is on every player’s mind right now. At this point, any extended period of struggle could mean total exile and it can be tough for some players to handle. Fortunately, Patrick Beverley knows how hard it can be to avoid the chopping block and he’s learned to handle it like an absolute pro.
