The Golden State Warriors have been through an emotional week, watching Draymond Green get suspended indefinitely after an unnecessary punch on Jusuf Nurkic. The team is struggling this season as well, prompting some like Stephen A. Smith to criticize the leadership of Stephen Curry.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr that Stephen A. criticized Curry, calling it a sickening move.
“Steph is as good of a leader as I’ve been around. The guy is an amazing human being. What he’s done over the last decade, leading this team through all the ups and downs and turmoil. For anybody to question Stephen Curry’s leadership, it’s actually kind of sickening to me. I saw some of that, it’s disgusting. He’s one of the finest human beings I have ever been around.”

Stephen A. went on ESPN and claimed that Curry needs to be held accountable for Draymond’s actions because if the same was happening to the Lakers, LeBron James‘ leadership would be questioned.
“It this were LeBron James, if this was a teammate of LeBron James, we’d be all over LeBron James. Where’s the leadership? What kind of impact is he having? I don’t think that we should be holding Steph Curry to lesser standards.”
Stephen A. completely missed the point with what he said. The problem isn’t that Curry is doing a bad job as a leader with Green, it’s that it’s unfair in general to hold these players accountable for the actions of others. If Stephen A. were going after LeBron for not being able to control a teammate, he’d be wrong on that front too.
Both Curry and LeBron are not disciplinarians who will scold their teammates for misbehaving. These are all multi-millionaire athletes who make their own adult decisions. Both these players have an incredible track record of being leaders on championship teams, so to launch an attack for such an issue shows the mentality people at talk shows approach basketball with.
Stephen Curry Is Doing His Best To Lead Golden State
The Warriors have had multiple locker-room issues involving Draymond Green over the last two seasons, but they can’t be unilaterally blamed on Steph. Green has shared how Curry tried to motivate him after his recent suspension, with his words showing the mark of a true leader. The roster is motivated to help Curry in a quest for a fifth championship.
Curry is averaging 29.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.4 assists this season, cooling off after a very hot start. He has had teammates who are struggling to find their form like Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins, but Curry has been trying his best to get them going. The team keeps running plays for their two struggling stars, with Curry also actively looking to get them going. It just hasn’t worked so far.
With a loss to the Clippers, the Warriors have fallen to 10-14 on the season, falling further away from the Western Conference playoff race. The 11th seed will be worried, but it seems roster changes might be the only thing that could salvage this squad.
As far as Curry is concerned, there hasn’t been much reason to criticize his leadership for the better part of a decade. To say he’s failing now when the team has multiple extraneous circumstances they’re struggling with is wholly unfair.
