The Dallas Mavericks have set the NBA on fire through the first 10 games of the season, sitting tied for the best record in the West with eight wins already. For a team that missed the playoffs last season, this is a shockingly good start for the franchise. Luka Doncic was honest about the main change that’s allowed the Mavs to have this success.
“I think we’re playing unselfish basketball. We’re just sharing the ball. We knew they would have the low-man early there, so there were a lot of corner 3s for us. We got them up 53 [3-point attempts]. Not all of them, but most of them were really good shots. That’s what we have to do [going forward].”
I asked Luka Doncic for his thoughts on what has helped the Dallas Mavericks' offense click lately, as they've put up 140.0 points per game over their last two games. He highlighted the Mavs attacking the New Orleans Pelicans sending the low man early.

The Mavericks offense has been electric with Doncic and Kyrie Irving leading the second-best offense in the NBA. The Indiana Pacers are the best in the league right now, but the Mavericks’ offensive system is bringing massive results for them. They have been a subpar defense once again, but their offense is so supercharged that no team can stop it.
The Mavs have scored 280 points as a team over their last two games, including a win over the Clippers. They’re yet to have a game with less than 100 points scored, with their lowest-scoring game this season coming against the Nuggets where they scored 114 points.
Luka Doncic And Kyrie Irving Clicking As A Star Duo
The combo guard play of Doncic and Irving has been questioned by many over the start of the season, especially with Irving having a slow start to the season. In tonight’s win over the Pelicans, the duo combined for 65 points, as Luka scored 30 and Kyrie added 35.
Head coach Jason Kidd explained that he thinks the duo is clicking because they’re willing to play unselfish basketball to help the other thrive. This has been reinforced in games, as Luka has his lowest usage rate since his sophomore season and Kyrie is averaging the second-most assists of his career, with his best passing season coming in his second year in Boston.
The presence of both Doncic and Irving has made the Mavericks the best clutch team in the NBA, with six out of their eight wins coming in clutch time. They’re undefeated in clutch games as well, sitting pretty with a 6-0 record due to Doncic and Irving’s overwhelming offensive capabilities hurting opposition teams.
Doncic has been among the MVP frontrunners to start the season, averaging 32.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 8.5 assists. Kyrie is recovering from a slow start but is averaging 23.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 6.8 assists nonetheless. Even if fans think that their success is unsustainable, the team needs to be commended for already building up a six-game buffer to being a .500 team.
With many of the supposed contenders in the West struggling badly like the Suns, Clippers, and Lakers, the Mavericks are setting themselves up for a top-six finish and a guaranteed playoff spot, maybe even a top-four finish if they can sustain this level of offensive excellence and add defensive reinforcements as the season goes on.
