Michael Jordan, widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, was not only known for his exceptional skills on the court but also for his quick wit and legendary competitiveness. A story recounted by Jason Williams from Bob Knight on ‘The Flagrant’ podcast perfectly encapsulates Jordan’s remarkable personality.

“He told me a story about Jordan… They were 29 points… And Bob Knight is walking across the court to go to locker room at halftime. He’s like, ‘What am I going to say to these guys to get them going? They did everything right.”

“He grabbed the stat sheet… Saw Jordan’s name, Jordan played 12 minutes in the first half. Jordan had 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists in 12 minutes in the first half. He’s thinking what am I gonna say, so I got it.”

“As soon as I open the door, I see Michael Jordan… So what do I do, ‘Godammnit MJ, what are you doing? Are you gonna set any screens tonight?”

“He said MJ Looked up with a little grin. He said, Coach, you remember last week when you told the whole world that I was the quickest person you ever seen on the basketball floor? He said, I’m setting them so quick, you don’t even see them.” (2:12:20)

In the tale, Jordan’s former 1984 Team USA coach, Bob Knight, found himself in a situation where he needed to motivate his team during halftime. The team had played exceptionally well, but Knight was contemplating how to inspire them further. He glanced at the halftime stats sheet and was astounded by Jordan’s numbers. In just 12 minutes, Jordan had accumulated 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists. Knight wondered what more he could possibly say.

As he exited the locker room to address the team, he was met by Jordan. Knight questioned Jordan’s effort and asked if he was going to set any screens that night. Michael Jordan, with his trademark grin, delivered a memorable response. He recalled Knight’s earlier statement about Jordan being the quickest person on the basketball floor and replied that he was setting screens so quickly that they couldn’t even be seen.

This story not only highlights Jordan’s extraordinary talent but also his unparalleled ability to respond with humor and confidence even in high-pressure situations. It’s a testament to his competitiveness and the way he could defuse tense moments with his quick thinking and a touch of wit.

Legendary Head Coach Bob Knight Passed Away At 83

Legendary basketball coach Bob Knight, known for his fiery coaching style and incredible success, has passed away at the age of 83. Knight’s impact on the sport of basketball and American culture was immeasurable, leaving a legacy that extended far beyond the court.

Knight’s coaching career was marked by an unwavering commitment to discipline, fundamentals, and teamwork. He was a masterful teacher who demanded excellence from his players. Under his guidance, his teams achieved remarkable success, including three NCAA national championships and a historic undefeated season in 1976.

Nicknamed “The General” for his strict coaching style and his roots at West Point, Knight was more than just a coach; he was an influential figure whose impact transcended the sport. He was famous for treating all his players, from stars to benchwarmers, with the same level of respect and expectation.

However, Knight’s coaching career was also marked by his fiery temper and numerous controversial incidents. He was known for his explosive outbursts and unconventional behavior, including throwing a chair during a game and engaging in physical altercations.

Knight was an uncompromising figure who valued hard work, discipline, and integrity. He had an open-door policy for high school coaches, and many sought to learn from his methods. His outside income from speaking engagements and endorsements allowed him to donate generously to libraries and support his players in their careers.

While Knight’s personality was polarizing, his contributions to the game of basketball and the development of young athletes were undeniable. He left an indelible mark on the sport, inspiring a generation of players and coaches with his unique coaching philosophy and dedication to excellence.

The passing of Bob Knight marks the end of an era in college basketball, leaving a void that will be challenging to fill. His impact on the game and his lasting legacy will be remembered for generations to come.
