After capturing the NBA championship last June, Nikola Jokic cemented himself as one of the best players in the game and one of the greatest big men in basketball history. Depending on who you ask, the trajectory of Jokic’s career is hit or miss, but former NBA veteran Evan Turner went a step further by suggesting that this entire period of NBA history will end up being known as the era of Jokic.

“Jokic, every single year. I know he just won a championship and MVP but what he’s doing and the level he’s doing it at… Jokic is really up there. This is probably his era. I’m looking to see what he’s doing, and going from being a skeptical individual – to paying attention to his story and the legacy he’s gonna leave.”

Nikola Jokic was getting mixed reviews from the fans before his 2023 playoff run. But now that he’s a champion, nobody can claim he doesn’t have the playoff success to validate his back-to-back MVP wins in 2021 and 2022. For now, the Joker is still a long way off from having his own era like LeBron, Steph, and other all-time greats, but if he keeps going at this pace, it’s only a matter of time before he draws comparisons to those guys.

Nikola Jokic Is An MVP Favorite In 2024

It’s still far too early to draw any definitive conclusions on the MVP race this season, but Jokic is expected to be among the favorites to win the award. In 2 games so far this season, he hasn’t lost a step with averages of 25.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 9 assists per game on 55% shooting. Jokic, 28, should be entering his prime this year and it could lead to the best stretch of his career.

Unfortunately, as a 2x MVP already, the odds are stacked against the Joker for winning it a third time and we saw him lose ground in the race last season as critics were reluctant to hand him his third-straight MVP. This time, the MVP race is completely wide open and if Jokic can maintain his level of play and stay healthy for the season it could result in a historic milestone for the 5x All-Star. If he wins it again, Jokic will become just the 9th NBA player in history to have won the award at least three times.

The Denver Nuggets Are The Team To Beat

If you had any doubts about Denver’s status heading into this season, their 3-0 start should alleviate any concerns. With some really solid wins over the Grizzlies, Lakers, and Thunder, Dever is undefeated in the first three games with an average win margin of 16.3 points. Despite losing Bruce Brown over the summer, the Nuggets have looked unaffected so far thanks to breakout performances from Peyton Watson, Christian Braun, and Julian Strawther off the bench, who combined for 38 points in Sunday’s win over Oklahoma City.

Obviously, after Game 3, it’s impossible to say for sure that the Nuggets are on track for their best season yet but they are looking poised, confident, and deeper than ever following their first championship win. Even amid new challengers in the West, the Nuggets are still a tier above the rest and they deserve the ultimate respect for the 2023-24 season.
