  • Klay Thompson gave an update on his contract extension talks
  • The shooting guard revealed that it’s possible he will sign an extension soon
  • Thompson believes that there are “many more memories to create” with the Warriors

Shooting guard Klay Thompson is one of the best 3PT shooters in the NBA and is considered a Golden State Warriors legend. Though he has achieved a lot with the Warriors, there is a chance that he will leave in 2024 free agency as he is in the last year of his contract.

Recently, we saw the veteran guard open up on the status of his contract extension talks with the Warriors. Thompson said there’s a possibility an extension is signed soon and noted that there are “more memories” to create with the Warriors.

“I think it’s possible (I sign an extension soon) and if not, life is still great,” Thompson said, per Tyler Conway of Bleacher Report. “Like, I’m still playing basketball, in my 13th year in the NBA, so I have no complaints. Whatever the future has in store, like, I’ve done so many great things in this uniform, and I know there are many more memories to create. Whatever happens, life is great. I can’t complain. I’ve had an incredible run here, and I look forward to making more great memories with the guys.”

There is no doubt that it would be amazing to see Klay Thompson finish his career with the Golden State Warriors. He is certainly one of the best players in franchise history and a fan favorite. However, the NBA is a business, and things don’t always work out that way.

This past season, Klay Thompson averaged 21.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Though his defense has gotten worse with injuries, Thompson is still a productive player who can contribute to a winning team.

Klay Thompson Will Likely Have To Wait To Sign An Extension

As of right now, the Golden State Warriors are deep in the luxury tax and may have to lower their salary bill at some point in the future. In fact, when NBA insider Mark Medina gave an update on Klay Thompson’s extension, he noted that the team is willing to let the season play out before signing Thompson to a new deal.

“I expect the Warriors to handle talks with Thompson the same way they did with Draymond Green last season. They will let the season play out and see how Thompson performs. They then will sign him to another deal. The dollar figure remains to be seen, given the Warriors’ hope to trim costs and Thompson’s inconsistency. But both parties will ensure that Thompson plays with the Warriors for the remainder of his NBA career.”

This approach from the Golden State Warriors makes absolute sense. The team wants to see how Thompson looks this season to ensure that they don’t overpay, and hopefully, Thompson can prove that he still deserves a big-time deal.

The Warriors Will Be Contenders This Season

There is no doubt that the Golden State Warriors will be contenders this season. Stephen Curry is still playing at a high level, and most of their core is intact. However, simply being a contender doesn’t mean a team will win the championship.

The Warriors’ championship chances hinge on Klay Thompson, showing that he can be a consistent No. 2 option for the team. That is even more important since the Warriors move Jordan Poole, losing a major source of offense.

Hopefully, we see Klay Thompson hoop at a high level this season. He is one of the best shooting guards in the league when healthy, and we’ll see how he does going forward.
