The wingspan, the position they play at, and the body composition do end up tricking us a bit when we see these players. Zion, for example, seems to be a lot bigger than many of these guys, especially LeVert, but they’re the exact same height.
NBA Fans Reacted To This Surprising Fact
As you might expect, NBA fans were very surprised with some of these. They stated that they had some very different estimations regarding the height of these players as they reacted to this post on Instagram.
A fan was surprised about Draymond’s height, “You mean to tell me Draymond was 6”5 and had Sabonis in hell?”
One couldn’t believe that Zion has been terrorizing the NBA despite being only that tall, “OMG Zion 6’5 and be terrorizing the league?”
A fan used to think Oubre was much taller, “I lowkey thought Oubre was like 6’7/6’8.”
One is shocked that Draymond and Zion are the same height, “Ain’t no way Draymond and Zion the same height.”
A fan has a lot of respect for Green after finding this out. “Respect to Dray, he’s a champion PF at that height?!”
Green’s accomplishments for a man that size, do seem rather special. For him to only be that tall and go up against big men on almost a nightly basis is very impressive.
He was the biggest reason why the Golden State Warriors could run that “Death Lineup” in late-game situations. While nowadays it’s not surprising to see teams go small, Green had to contend with proper big men back when they first started it, and even then, he was able to hold his own.
Draymond Green’s Former Teammate Explained What Makes Him A Great Defender
It really shouldn’t have been possible for a man of Draymond’s height to do the things he has done over the years. So, what is the secret to his success? Well, Green’s former teammate Marreese Speights explained what makes him a great defender.
“Draymond’s got good instincts,” Speights said on SiriusXM Radio. “He knows how to guard a bigger guy ’cause he’s been guarding bigger guys his whole life. When he was in middle school to high school he’s been guarding bigger guys.”
“He’s got a really good instinct of knowing the perfect time to block shots. He’s got really long arms, he’s a smart guy. So when it comes to guarding anybody, he can guard anybody whether it’s big, it’s a guard, he’s going to be able to guard anybody cause he has fast hands, he’s going to do all the little small things to get under your skin.”
Draymond reportedly has a 7’1″ wingspan, which definitely helps him a lot, and combine that with his excellent instincts and you get a phenomenal defender. Steve Kerr believes Green is the best defender ever, and while that is a bit of a stretch, he probably deserves to be in the conversation.
