Victor Wembanyama is the most hyped rookie to enter the NBA, arguably since LeBron James. The 7’5 French phenom has massive expectations placed on him, but it doesn’t seem like he’s letting that bother him too much.

Speaking about his idea of success for his rookie season, Victor Wembanyama said he wants the team to win games but isn’t too worried if success doesn’t come to him immediately.

“The ideal start would already be the playoffs. But I’m patient, and I know it will happen. Not winning my first few years is no barrier to becoming a Hall of Famer or winning five later,” Wembanyama said.

This is a very mature approach for the San Antonio Spurs man to take, and it shows that he is already taking a long-term approach to his career. Very few NBA stars have walked into immediately successful situations and the fact that Wembanyama is alright with that shows that he has bigger plans for his career.

The Minimum Expectations From Rookie Victor Wembanyama

Having said that, the hype around him has pushed him into a bit of a corner. Victor Wembanyama has received a lot of love, praise, and adulation already, but that can change quickly if he can’t live up to the expectations.

Nobody thinks that the Frenchman will lead the San Antonio Spurs to the championship in his first NBA season. It will take time for him to acclimatize to the physicality and demands of a new league.

But the minimum expectation for Wembanyama is that he needs to be Rookie Of The Year. To be eligible for the award, he will have to play at least 65 games though, which means his health will have to be handled with the utmost care.

Victor Wembanyama’s stats are a question mark, but he will be expected to average at least more than 10.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game based on the profile and talent he is walking into the league.

The San Antonio Spurs are planning to play Wembanyama as a power forward to get him used to the rigors of the game, but people will also expect him to grow into the center role thanks to his size.

Victor Wembanyama Wants To Have A Unique Career

Being 7’5 and having the skills of a guard means that Victor Wembanyama is already a unicorn. If his body can hold up, then he has every asset at his disposal to become something the NBA has never witnessed before.

To pull all of it off, Wembanyama will need to have a sharp mentality and incredible work ethic. He wants to make that happen for himself though, as made evident by Victor Wembanyama’s words about his unique mindset.

“Becoming greater than your past self is finding new ways to work that others haven’t thought of. When you want to become a unique player, you have to work in unique ways,” Wembanyama said.

There is no ceiling for what Victor Wembanyama can become and the fact that he is with the San Antonio Spurs bodes well for his career. Even Michael Jordan didn’t win a championship till his 7th season in the NBA, so he has time to get it done.
