  • The Warriors have started contract talks with Klay Thompson
  • The deal is likely to be similar to Draymond Green’s deal from this summer
  • The Warriors want to keep their core together

The Golden State Warriors are a team that has goals to win immediately, and it is clear that their main priority is maximizing Stephen Curry’s championship window. They traded for Chris Paul and retained Draymond Green this summer, and it seems as though they are trying to retain another key member of the squad.

According to NBA insider Ramona Shelburne, the Golden State Warriors have opened up contract talks with Klay Thompson. She noted that the deal will likely be similar in structure to Draymond Green’s four-year, $100 million deal from this summer.

“My understanding is that they have opened contract extension talks with Klay Thompson,” said Ramona Shelburne. “The optionality goes both ways. Not necessarily that he’s trying to leave… It behooves him to have a great year this year and he becomes more valuable if he does.”

“They are definitely open to the idea of doing [an extension] because they’ve opened discussions with Klay Thompson. I think the years will probably be similar to what Draymond Green signed, which was a four-year deal… I know that the Warriors feel very strongly about keeping Klay Thompson and Draymond Green alongside Steph Curry.”

It remains to be seen if Klay Thompson ends up agreeing to terms with the Golden State Warriors in the future. He has been a key player for their four championships, but it is fair to say that he has declined in recent years, particularly on the defensive end of the floor.

This past season with the Golden State Warriors, Klay Thompson averaged 21.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game while shooting 41.2% from 3PT range. Thompson can still be a key player for a championship team, and it would be amazing to see him stay with the Warriors for the rest of his career.

Joe Lacob Expects Klay Thompson To Stay With Warriors Beyond 2023-24 Season

There is no doubt that the Warriors have an interest in keeping Klay Thompson with the team for the long term. In fact, Warriors owner Joe Lacob already stated that he expects Klay Thompson to stay with the team beyond the 2023-24 season.

“I fully expect that we’ll have some substantial discussions soon sometime and we’ll see if we can’t put something together that allows Klay to be here for a long time, which we clearly would like him to be.”

Keeping Klay Thompson long-term will likely make superstar Stephen Curry more willing to stay with the franchise. On top of that, the team would be doing right by a franchise legend, and we’ll see what happens in the future.

Klay Thompson Thinks The Warriors Will Win A Fifth Championship

Based on his activity this offseason, Klay Thompson is clearly excited and hopeful for next season. Thompson promised fans in China a 5th NBA championship, and the team certainly has the talent to win at the highest level. It will be interesting to see whether they have more urgency this season.

Ultimately, the Warriors’ championship chances will be based on how Stephen Curry plays this season. However, Klay Thompson playing well as a No. 2 option will be important as well, and hopefully, Thompson is ready for the challenge.
