• James Harden was fined $100,000 by the NBA for his comments on Daryl Morey earlier today
• $100,000 is the largest allowable fine that the NBA can impose on a player
• The NBPA will file a grievance on Harden’s behalf
The NBA is not on the side of James Harden in his current standoff with Daryl Morey, as the league decided to issue a $100,000 fine for the guard due to his public comments against Morey. The NBPA has come to Harden’s rescue and filed a grievance to an independent arbitrator to remove the punishment.
“We respectfully disagree with the league’s decision to discipline James Harden for recent comments he made, which we believe do not violate the rule against public trade demands. We intend to file a grievance and have the matter heard by our Arbitrator.”

Harden didn’t explicitly say he wants to be traded during his speech in China last week, but he did claim he will never play for Morey again. That can be interpreted as a public trade request, which is the reason why he’s being fined.
The NBPA is going to do its best at protecting Harden, but his actions have gotten him in a hot soup right now.
Will James Harden Find A New Home Before Training Camp?
Everyone knows how Harden can be in a locker room if he wants to get traded. We’ve seen him force his way out of many teams, but doing it under the stubborn Daryl Morey is a different challenge altogether. Morey rarely loses trade negotiations and he will try to keep holding on to Harden for as long as he physically can.
Harden averaged 21.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 10.7 assists last season, so there’s definitely on-court value that Philly will be losing. He is under contract for another season, so maybe playing out the year is the best thing Harden can do.
With everything that’s happened already, it won’t be easy for Harden and Morey to reconcile, even if it’s for just one more season.
