- James Harden shocked the NBA world by calling 76ers President Daryl Morey a liar recently
- Despite speculation that he would escape punishment, the NBA has announced a fine for James Harden’s comments
- Calling Daryl Morey a liar in public will cost James Harden $100,000
James Harden has been the center of attention since he publicly called Daryl Morey a liar and said he would never be part of the same organization as him in China.
And despite reports that he didn’t break any rules with what said, the NBA has fined James Harden anyway.
Adrian Wojnarowski reported it, writing, “The NBA is fining Sixers star James Harden $100,000 for his recent comments referring to franchise president Daryl Morey as a ‘liar,’ sources tell ESPN.”

The fact that the league has gotten involved seems to be less than ideal for both James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers, but a $100,000 fine won’t be a huge deal for Harden, either.
After opting into his contract, James Harden will make $35 million in the 2023-24 season. To put into perspective just how little a fine of this size matters, that is 0.28% of his salary for next season. Harden will be just fine.
James Harden And The 76ers Will Face The Real Consequences Of This Saga Moving Forward
While the fine itself isn’t very big, there are much worse things that could come out of this for James Harden as well as the Philadelphia 76ers.
Daryl Morey lying to stars is a narrative that has caught on since Harden’s comments, his words to Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul in the past have resurfaced. As such, players will be wary when it comes to dealing with him going forward.
What’s more, with James Harden having publicly burned bridges with Morey and the organization, it’s likely impossible to get a good trade package for him. Even if he is open to joining teams other than the Clippers, he and the Sixers will have no leverage.
This will be an issue for James Harden as well. If his season is derailed because he isn’t traded, then the 33-year-old may not get as big a contract next offseason as he wants for his final big deal in the NBA.
James Harden averaged 21.0 points and 10.7 assists last season, but he has been on the decline. If this situation doesn’t get resolved soon, then he might end up missing out on upwards of $50 million on any potential next contract.
