Allen Iverson was a man of the people during his NBA career, someone that changed the culture around basketball. He was friends with various influential hip-hop artists, including the legendary Notorious B.I.G. Allen Iverson once spoke about their relationship and how he found out about the rapper’s tragic murder in 1997.

“While he was out in LA right, he was trying to get the questions from his mom,” Iverson said. “So he came to see me after the game, so I’m like, ‘What are you doing here?’

“He was like, ‘You know, came to see you.’ He had a couple of guys with him, Cease, Rob. Then when I got back home, we was playing the Bullets at that time.

“My mom came from Virginia, she woke me up at like 4’O clock in the morning, said, ‘Your man dead.’ That’s how I found out.”

Cristopher Wallace, known as the Notorious B.I.G. is considered one of the greatest rappers of all time. On March 9th, 1997, 24-year-old Biggie was murdered after being shot following his attendance at the Soul Train Awards.

Allen Iverson had been drafted No. 1 overall in 1996, and they had developed a connection. Iverson must have been both shocked and sad to learn about Small’s murder.

Allen Iverson’s Attempt At A Rap Career Got Flamed By David Stern

By the time he became a superstar in the early 2000s, Allen Iverson had significantly changed the culture in the NBA. Hip-hop became more linked with the game, and players inspired by him were also dabbling in fashion.

During this time, Allen Iverson decided he wanted to pursue a rap career too. This led to a hilarious exchange with David Stern, who shut the whole thing down real quick.

“When I did that terrible rap album. When I did that bull****, that’s when I had a problem with David Stern. I remember going into the office and he was reading my lyrics Kev. David Stern was actually reading “40 Bars” off a piece of paper…

“I was trying not to laugh because I knew how serious it was. And the sh** that I was saying, obviously, you know. So to hear David Stern rapping it. It was crazy… It was not a good idea (the album), it looked so bad.”

Allen Iverson has led a colorful and legendary life, so even if he never won an NBA championship, he can claim things nearly no one else can. There are likely thousands more stories like these that fans can only imagine and hope to read about someday.
