  • Austin Reaves is proving all his doubters wrong, he scored 16 points in Team USA’s win over Germany
  • The San Antonio Spurs chose not to pay Austin Reaves big money in free agency and analyst Bill Simmons has now criticized that
  • Bill Simmons took subtle shots at Cedi Osman and Cam Payne while praising Austin Reaves

Austin Reaves had a stellar performance for Team USA in their 99-91 win against Germany, scoring 16 points and playing efficiently. He finished the game with a two-handed dunk in transition and Reaves is getting a lot of plaudits right now. Bill Simmons has taken the opportunity to bash a team that passed on him.

“San Antonio not maxing Reaves gets dumber every week. Congrats on saving that cap space for Cedi Osman and Cam Payne,” Simmons wrote on social media.

The San Antonio Spurs had a big offseason after landing No. 1 overall draft pick Victor Wembanyama, but they also had the cap space to give out big contracts. Reaves landed with the Lakers for four years and $56 million, but the Spurs could have potentially given him $84 million if they hadn’t decided against it.

Simmons also took some shots at the players they signed instead, Cam Payne and Cedi Osman, which feels like something of a shot.

Austin Reaves hasn’t been at a high level for too long, but looking at his rapid growth, Simmons is right and this may end up being a lost opportunity for the Spurs. Reaves is blossoming into an all-around NBA starter and his contract with the Lakers is already starting to look like a massive bargain.

Austin Reaves Could Break Out As A Borderline All-Star Next Season

Austin Reaves’ inclusion was questioned by some when the Team USA roster was announced. And he has exceeded the expectations people had of him as a part of the team. But Reaves might be on his way to getting even better. There is a possibility that he could become a borderline All-Star for the Los Angeles Lakers next season.

In the playoffs last year, he averaged 16.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game and he looks to have improved further. If he can provide roughly 20 points per game this season, which is very possible, Austin Reaves would have grown into a borderline All-Star.

The Los Angeles Lakers will certainly be hoping so, and the loss of teams like the San Antonio Spurs is their gain. It seems like Austin Reaves will make a lot of the teams that questioned him look foolish over the coming NBA seasons.
