- Former NBA All-Star rips Hall of Fame for letting certain players in
- Arenas explains why championships should not matter for HOF eligibility
- Hall of Fame standards continue to be a highly-debated subject in the NBA community
The greatest honor for any professional athlete is being named to the Hall of Fame, which essentially immortalizes your career for All-Time. The NBA is no different, of course, but there is a growing sentiment that the standard for entry has been set too low.
“Team success should have nothing to do with that door,” said former NBA guard Gilbert Arenas on his podcast. “You can’t be in that door with Michael Jordan, Larry Bird with mediocre stats. Some of these people shouldn’t even be in it, because of the name that’s in there. You’re supposed to be apex. Hall of Fame should be the number one option or a great a** number two…”
WHO THE HELL ARE SOME OF THESE GUYS IN THE HALL OF FAME?????

For what is essentially supposed to be the highest accolade a player could achieve, it’s much easier to get in than one might think. With players like Dennis Rodman, Bill Walton, and Bill Bradley having got the HOF nod, it seems all you really need for consideration is to play a significant role on a contending team.
But for some players/fans/experts, the criteria for entry should be much, much higher. According to some, the Hall of Fame should only include the best of the best.
Should Non-Title Winners Be In The Hall Of Fame?
While the HOF is meant to be an individual accolade, winning is often the biggest factor in the selection process. To make the Hall of Fame without a title, players typically need to have played at an MVP level for most of their careers.
Even still, some argue that only champions should be allowed on the list.
It’s a debate as old as time in the NBA, and one that gets talked about every single year. Arenas isn’t wrong at all for wanting the Hall of Fame to be more exclusive, but it’s unlikely things will change anytime soon.
After so many years of doing it a certain way, the Hall of Fame process isn’t going to transform overnight. But if people continue to voice their opinions on it, there might come a point where we re-evaluate what it means to be a Hall of Famer.
