  • Shaq once tore off a basketball rim on NBA Inside Stuff

NBA Inside Stuff was an iconic show that originally ran from 1990 to 2006. It featured highlights, behind-the-scenes interviews, and exclusive footage of the biggest names in basketball.

NBA Inside Stuff was a trailblazer that revolutionized sports entertainment, bringing fans closer to their favorite players and teams than ever before. The show was hosted by Ahmad Rashad and featured a rotating cast of co-hosts, including Willow Bay, Julie Moran, and Summer Sanders. It was a must-watch for basketball fans of all ages and left an indelible mark on the sport.

In this article, we will take a trip down memory lane and relive some of the most memorable moments from the show that will make you nostalgic for the golden era of basketball entertainment.

Now That’s The Inside Stuff

The NBA’s popularity grew tremendously in the 1980s and up into the early 1990s, thanks to players like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan. So, it made sense for the NBA to create a show about the NBA to take advantage of this surge in popularity.

On October 27, 1990, NBA Inside Stuff premiered on NBC. This show would be a staple in the lives of many young children’s Saturday morning viewings.

The show was originally hosted by former NFL wide receiver Ahmad Rashad and ESPN reporter Julie Moran. Rashad’s personality really drew the viewers in, plus his relationship with the NBA players helped the athletes open up on the show.

NBA Inside Stuff’s premise was to show behind the scene action of the NBA while also interviewing players about everything, including about their lives. There was a segment called “Rewind” that showcased highlights of the NBA week with the popular music of the day.

One of the most popular segments was “Jam Session.” This segment showcased the biggest slam dunks in the NBA.

After the first season, journalist and former model Willow Bay replaced Julie Moran until 1998, when former swimming Olympic champion Summer Sanders joined Rashad.

The show fit perfectly well on its Saturday morning lineup on NBC during the 90s. NBA Inside Stuff came on after kids watched their Saturday morning cartoon shows and sometimes before an NBA game.

The show became so popular that a magazine by the same name was created in the 90s. This magazine was one of the most popular basketball magazines for kids at the time.

The show’s original run, starting in 1990, would end in 2006, as all good things must come to an end at some point. The big reason why the show started to suffer viewership toward the end was when it moved from NBC to ABC.

ABC gained the rights to the show from the new NBA TV contract in 2002. Viewers who watched the show religiously on NBC didn’t make the jump to ABC. Thus, the show was canceled on January 15, 2006.

The show would get a reboot, like most shows and movies today, in 2013 on NBA TV. This time, former NBA star Grant Hill and sports anchor Kristen Ledlow.

The new version could not duplicate the charm of the original show and would only last until 2016 before being canceled for good. Still, NBA Inside Stuff has gone down in TV history as one of the best products released by the NBA.

It was a joy to watch as a kid back in the 1990s, and it is a joy to rewatch the episodes now as an adult. The reason for this is that only NBA Inside Stuff could give you content like Shaquille O’Neal pulling off the rim in a one-on-one game vs. Ahmad Rashad.

Now that’s the inside stuff.
