The basketball world stood still as Becky Hammon, former San Antonio Spurs coach, and WNBA champion, took the stage at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony. In a moment that transcended the game, Hammon’s speech radiated gratitude and respect for her mentor and friend, Gregg Popovich.

Reflecting on her journey from the San Antonio Silver Stars to the NBA sidelines, Hammon acknowledged the historic significance of her role as the second woman ever hired as an NBA assistant coach. But it was her heartfelt words for Popovich that truly struck a chord:

“Pop, I’m not gonna look at you. You’re a man of principle and excellence. I knew you weren’t trying to be courageous when you hired me, but you did do something no one in professional sports has ever done.”

“You display excellence, you expect excellence, and model how to become excellent, in your everyday routine and how you go about your work.”

“You spoke courage into me with a phone call as I was getting ready to coach that first summer league team in 2015. You said just be you, you’re gonna be great.”

“You’ve changed the trajectory of my life and of so many other girls and young women.”

"I know you weren't trying to be courageous when you hired me, but you did do something in professional sports that nobody had ever done." 🗣️

Becky Hammon’s ascension to the Hall of Fame isn’t just about her remarkable achievements on the court or her pioneering role in coaching. It’s a testament to the enduring power of relationships that transcend gender and norms.

As Hammon stood on that stage, she embodied the spirit of progress and camaraderie, reminding us all that greatness knows no boundaries.

The Legacy Of Becky Hammon

Becky Hammon’s incredible odyssey from a small town in South Dakota to becoming a basketball trailblazer is a story that resonates with grit, determination, and unyielding passion for the game.

In 1999, the basketball world wasn’t yet aware of the force that Hammon would become. Overlooked in the WNBA Draft, she defied the odds by securing a spot on the New York Liberty roster.

From there, her career took flight, marked by a relentless work ethic and an unquenchable thirst for improvement. As a microwave scorer coming off the bench, Hammon quickly emerged as a sparkplug, igniting her team’s momentum when it mattered most.

But Hammon’s journey wasn’t without its hurdles. A devastating ACL injury threatened to prematurely end her playing days. Undeterred, she transformed adversity into opportunity, using her time off the court to immerse herself in the tactical intricacies of coaching.

In 2014, Hammon shattered the glass ceiling as the second female assistant coach in NBA history, joining the San Antonio Spurs. Her impact was immediate and lasting, as she contributed to the team’s success while simultaneously paving the way for future generations of female coaches.

Fast forward to 2021, and Hammon’s making waves once more. Her unique style, a mix of strategy and camaraderie, had her players thriving. And the Las Vegas Aces clinched a title under her guidance, showing that her impact goes beyond the playbook.

Hammon’s keen basketball acumen, combined with her empathetic leadership style, resonated with players and earned her the title of WNBA Coach of the Year.

As Hammon steps into the Basketball Hall of Fame, her legacy continues to inspire athletes, coaches, and dreamers around the world. Beyond her accolades and achievements, Hammon’s legacy is one of empowerment.
