• A recent report indicates Nike is the king of the world sneaker market

• Jordan Brand, a subsidiary of Nike, is in second place

• Nike holds 18% of the market share, while Jordan comes in with 11%

Sneakers and sports go hand in hand. Every major sport has a thriving footwear industry around it, as fans look to emulate their favorite athletes by rocking shoes, they know the athletes also wear. But which brand controls most of the market share?

A recent Statista report indicated Nike controls 18% of the world sneaker market, with Jordan coming second with 11%. Given Nike also owns Jordan, this gives the company a 29% market share in a very competitive industry.

Adidas comes in third with 9% while Skechers are tied for fourth with Vans at 7%. Converse and New Balance round out the list with 4% each, with notable brands such as Puma and Under Armour not making the cut.

Nike has a robust marketing wing that promotes both Nike as well as Jordan athletes. Notable athletes under the Nike flag right now are LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Paul George, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, among others.

Jordan has Luka Doncic, Jayson Tatum, Zion Williamson, Russell Westbrook, and other rising NBA prospects on their roster.

Which Brand Has The Better Lineup?

You have to say that Nike has the best NBA roster of talent by a long shot. Jordan Brand is still slowly getting its teeth into the next generations of NBA superstars, but Nike has the biggest names under their control already. LeBron is arguably the most valuable American athlete in the world, and he is happily signed with Nike.

What brings Jordan into the conversation isn’t young stars like Tatum or Doncic but the enduring popularity of Michael Jordan. Shoes with his iconic logo and status will always sell like hotcakes. Both companies also have non-basketball ventures that are very successful, with Jordan becoming increasingly popular as streetwear in particular.

Ultimately, both brands are playing into Nike’s overall dominance of the game. To control over a quarter of the world’s sneaker market with two brands proves that Nike is currently miles ahead of its competition.
