Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. was faced with a big decision this offseason. In the aftermath of a brutal defeat against the Lakers, everyone knew a change had to be made if the Warriors wanted to stay on top.
In the end, he chose to trade Jordan Poole and essentially doubled down on the proven core of Steph, Klay, and Draymond Green. Financially, there wasn’t much room for a contract of Poole’s size and it ended up being the determining factor.
“I think the biggest thing really is just financially we’re in a position where we had to make some decisions,” Dunleavy said, via The Athletic. “I think we were able to make a decision where we could free some of that while also still being highly competitive and having a chance to win a championship. It just ended up having to be a decision we had to make and so be it. At the same time, we needed to get Draymond back, what he brings to this team and what he has meant for the last 10 years. That’s going to keep going. That matters. So we prioritized that. And from there, we knew, another contract probably needed to be moved. And Jordan ended up being that one.”
The Dubs got some flack for the deal at the time but, looking back, they did what was best with the options they had. And. now, it’ll be up to Steph and head coach Steve Kerr to ensure next season goes smoother than the last.
Did The Warriors Make The Right Move?
In the end the situation between Draymond and Jordan Poole was extreme and nobody could have seen it coming. Sadly, the only way to fix it was a breakup and that’s exactly what the Warriors did. But, arguably more importantly, it saved money for the Warriors so they can keep their group intact for several more years to come.
“I think the deal for us accomplishes two things,” Dunleavy said. “One, it helps our team next season, and two, it helps our team down the road financially kind of even some things out for us.
Golden State tried to toe the line between youth and experience, but after last year’s expensive failure, they cannot afford to make the same mistake. The Jordan Poole trade was an unfortunate, but necessary, step for Golden State to get back on tack.
