- D’Angelo Russell says there’s no question that Nikola Jokic is the best player in the world
- It is “not close”, according to Russell
- The Denver Nuggets notably beat the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals
The Los Angeles Lakers made a good run to the Western Conference Finals, but they were felled by the Denver Nuggets, who ended up sweeping them. It is clear that the Lakers were simply outclassed, and they’ll need to be better next season if they are to win.
Center Nikola Jokic played a huge role in the Denver Nuggets winning the series, and recently, Los Angeles Lakers point guard D’Angelo Russell admitted that Nikola Jokic is the best player in the world.
“They got the best player in basketball on their team,” D’Lo says. “No disrespect to nobody. He’s the best player in the NBA right now. Not even close.” (31:32)
There is no doubt that Nikola Jokic has shown that he is the best player in the world this season. The center is the best passing big man in history and is currently in the middle of his prime. More championships could come in Denver, and some believe that we are looking at the start of a new dynasty.
Last season, Nikola Jokic averaged 24.5 PPG, 11.8 RPG, and 9.8 APG for the Denver Nuggets. It is clear that he’s once in a generation type of talent, and we’ll see how he does next season.
Coach Mike Malone Knew That Nikola Jokic Would Be Special As A Rookie
Earlier in his career, nobody expected Nikola Jokic to become the player that he is today. In fact, coach Mike Malone revealed that only when Nikola Jokic almost put a triple-double against the Spurs, did he realize how special Jokic was.
“But there was a game his rookie season against San Antonio in San Antonio with Tim Duncan and Nikola’s line was something like 26 points, 13 rebounds, eight or nine assists,” Malone continued. “And I’m like, he just did it against one of the best players to ever play the game. On the road as a young kid and he impacted the game across the board. But what really stood out to me during that rookie season is unselfishness and his IQ and his ability to make everyone around him better… That game in that year one as a rookie against San Antonio and Tim Duncan, it was really kind of for me when the light bulb went off.”
It is clear that Nikola Jokic is one of the most special players in the league today. Hopefully, we see him dominate again next year, and he seems set for a monster year with the Nuggets.
