  • Tyronn Lue reflects on the time Eddie Jones took him out drinking 27 times in a row
  • Lue says the experienced changed him forever
  • A lot of people can’t play in LA due to off-court distractions

Life in Los Angeles is great when you’re in the NBA. As the biggest city on the West Coast, LA has become the center of culture in America, and living there can often be a life-changing experience.

In a recent chat on ‘All the Smoke’ podcast, former NBA player Tyronn Lue spoke about his LA experience when he first moved to the city. Looking back, he explained how Eddie Jones took him and all the rooks out for a night in the city for over one month straight.

“Eddie Jones took us up under his wing… We went out 27 nights in a row. That right there just changed who I was as a person. Never drank, never smoked but it just opened my eyes to a lot of different things and it was crazy. You know, a lot of people can’t play in LA because it opens your eyes to a whole other lifestyle.”

Every city has a wild side, but Los Angeles is a whole different level. For those with the money to spend, it usually involves a lot of late nights and Lue found that out the hard way when he went out praying with his new teammates.

Today, LA is still pretty much the same — and while it helps to drive the top stars to the city it can also be a major source of distraction for players who need to put all of their energy into the game.

Not Everyone Can Be A Laker

Living in Los Angeles comes with many challenges. Besides the ridiculous traffic, insane taxes, and distracting party opportunities, being a part of the franchise means living at a higher standard than your peers.

Every single season the Lakers are expected to compete, and anything but the desired results usually brings about a firestorm of criticism toward the team and the players. Not everyone can handle the expectations, but those that do become immortalized as a legend forever.

In the case of Tyronn Lue, he managed to make the most out of his time in LA, both on and off the court. And while he’s on the other side of things today as the coach of the Clippers, there’s no way he’ll forget his initiation into Los Angeles.
