• The 2019 Warriors and the 2022 Lakers have some fantastic all-time talent on their rosters
• Neither roster won the championship, but fans were curious about who would win a fantasy matchup
• The 2022 Lakers didn’t make the playoffs while the 2019 Warriors lost in the NBA Finals
Fans and commentators were stunned in the summer of 2018 when DeMarcus Cousins took a minimum contract to ring-chase with the 2019 Golden State Warriors. That made that team a collection of incredible talent that was considered bound to win the title.
Another team expected to win the title was the 2022 Lakers, who signed past their prime veterans like Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard to give themselves a shot. Though both teams ultimately failed, fans had fun arguing which team would win if all players were in their prime.
One fan said, “Lakers whooping the Warriors’ ass.”
Another fan picked Golden State, “GSW easy. They have the 2 best players in the series. And the 3 best shooters in the series. Plus Lebron n AD can’t close. GSW In 5 games.”
A fan jumped to remind people of prime Carmelo and Dwight, “Idk if ya realize how dominant Dwight and Carmelo were in their primes.”
One fan thinks LeBron will cause the Lakers to lose, “Golden State. I’ve seen Lebron fold in his prime too many times.”
Anthony Davis could be the X-factor according to one fan, “All in their primes, AD will be the X-factor because they’re about equally matched otherwise.”
Lakers had more supporters, “In their primes, the Lakeshow… No brainer”
Russell Westbrook didn’t get any support from one fan, “Westbrook f***s up the Lakers and Warriors win by 4 points.”
The 2019 Golden State Warriors had Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, and DeMarcus Cousins. Injuries to everyone but Curry and Green ultimately sunk them in the NBA Finals.
Meanwhile. the 2022 Lakers featured Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Dwight Howard. All these players were past their primes and an injury-riddled Lakers squad didn’t even make the playoffs. Dwight and Melo haven’t played in the NBA since.
Who Would Win?
The 2022 Lakers in their prime could honestly win this matchup with ease. Prime LeBron is arguably the greatest basketball player ever, while he’s supported by the MVP version of Westbrook.
AD was arguably the best two-way big man in the NBA before Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s emergence. Carmelo Anthony is one of the greatest scorers the game has ever seen while Dwight Howard is one of the greatest defensive big men in the modern era.
Prime Howard would easily clamp even the best version of Boogie Cousins. The rest of the Warriors’ four were pretty much in their prime but would result in interesting matchups.
Prime Curry would be the pick over Russ, but prime Melo may have a deeper bag than prime Klay. LeBron would beat almost anyone in his prime, so we have to give him the edge over KD. Prime AD would also take the matchup over Draymond, so our decision is pretty simple at that point.
